Hey Bri,

The wife is already trying to figure out how to add some fencing with zip strips or something so we could pick up some of the smaller rocks after we work up the ground. Trying to save the backs as much as possible:D.

If anyone has any idea's on the screen let me know, I figure after it's worked up ok just a couple zips across the front and a couple on the rear would let us sift the loose dirt pretty easy.

I had looked at a rock bucket with more tines but it weighted a ton and we were trying to cut the weight down.

Maybe some heavy duty hardware cloth I think its called. Usually can get it with 1/2" to 3/4" openings in the weave. Probably have to wrap it around the outside tines and wire it down good. Most likely wont work but that's all I got.

You might give a piece of expanded metal a try.
Its tough but should be easy to attach and is available in different thicknesses and openings.

Two sections of cow panel crosshatched with each other and tied to the grapple with u-bolts should make a very durable basket for rocks. if you put a section of welded wire 2" x 4" sandwiched between them, even small rocks won't fall through. The whole thing should be light enough that it's easily handled when installing or removing. Remember, if you want to shake the basket and clear any dirt, the openings can't be too small.

This is maybe a little rude but I would like to make some comparisons to the Markham LD-48 grapple that I have:

-Has grease-able pins/bushings welded in vs. the hitch pins in drilled steel
-Has a welded cylinder (USA made-not sure about the one on yours)
-Has a shield covering the piston rod
-Has "teeth" cut into edges for better gripping power
-The bottom tines are curved to allow you to get under stuff better

Probably not a fair comparision...the Markham is a whole other class of grapple, IMHO.

Hey Kenny,

I think what he means and I am not trying to put words in anyone's mouth is, this is a light weight grapple for guys who have a tractor like ours that is only 35 hp. It's not a grapple for a guy who has a 60 hp tractor or bobcat that wants to work it everyday with big or heavy jobs or in a business.

This is a less expensive unit, I got mine for a little over $800 + shipping on ebay. There are more tines, straight to go under brush, it is another choice for someone like us that just needs one for light work every now and then around the farm.

For me if I have something heaver to move I've got my forks. Like I said its over 300 lbs lighter so I've got more lifting capacity with this one over another unit.

OK, The Markham is:
-Under $1000.00
-Designed for smaller machines
-The LD in LD-48 means "light duty"
-It does have a lot less tines, but they are taller I think and also 3/8" thick
-Said to weigh 385 lbs.

Pretty comparable I think...not "a different class" Maybe he thinks I have the big SSL grapple they offer? The pictures in the link above showing the grapple on the tractor are mine.

Expanded metal is the 'screening' you'll want to use! Diamond shape, but pricey! Your going to love the 'grapple' capability! Merry Christmas! Ho, Ho, Ho!!!!~Scotty
