Buy some John Deere ,hydraulic dye, about $7.00,makes it easy to see your hydraulic fluid(make sure to tell your servicing dealer).Mine thought I had put automatic trans fluid in it!
I'll 2nd that fix. Worked well in my L3200 with the same invisible fluid if it was above or below that dam sight glass. But can scare people. I wouldn't imagine ATF would actually cause any problems (most of the automatic transmission magic is actually hydraulic), but isn't ideal.

My new L4060 has a dipstick for the hydraulics, but it's still hard to see. Went to put the 2nd half of my red JD dye in (only used half the bottle on the L3200) & it was all dried up.

My M59 did the same thing a few years ago. The HST pedal was completely unresponsive. Cause was a broken cable that connects the HST pedal to some sort of rotating 6" drum back about a foot from the pedal and underneath the floorboard. I couldn't see the break because it was inside the armored cable....but I could see that the drum should rotate when the pedal was moved and it didn't. Easy fix, but a bummer. Scary too.

I am hoping that it something like this and not a catastrophic failure of like a hydraulic pump or something very expensive.

Sounds like the connection between the engine and trans is the problem, I don't believe the 4701hst has a clutch pedal so I'm not sure what the connection looks like.

Can you see/access the driveshaft from under the tractor?

Implements will still work as the pump is mounted directly on the engine.

The pto shaft doesn't have the power to spin the bushhog though. Could that be related to the engine/trans connection as well? The shaft spins when engaged with nothing attached but when I reattach bush hog it doesn't have the power to spin the blades.

Yes, the same driveshaft that powers the hst also provides power to the pto, if the connection has enough friction it can spin the unloaded pto but doesn't have enough to spin it once it's loaded.

I'm willing to bet the unloaded pto will also stop if you hit the hst pedal and put a load on it.

I think you are totally correct. Seems to have no power at all. What's strange is pushing the HST pedal produces no change in sound of the tractor or engine at all. Neither does turning the PTO switch on and off,

There won't be any change in the engine because the trans/pto can't put a load on the engine, it's as if you had the clutch in (if you had one).

Isnt the PTO on that model controlled by a switch? If so that means hydraulically engaged. I think that's a separate pump in the tranny & not part of the impliment loop (it is in GST machines at least). So low hydraulic fluid levels could explain enough pressure to barely engage the PTO clutch but not keep it engaged.

If the fluid was low enough to prevent hst drive and pto operations I imagine it would also prevent the loader and 3pt from working, or would cause enough jerkyness to be noticeable.

That's why I'm thinking it could be mechanical.

What size rotary cutter or Bush hog was being used?
