Diesel Engine Oil

Some very interesting points and thoughts - I do like how Cummins don't sell the oil but tell you to use the approved oil which is valvoline - can get it a million places and at a decent deal. Thanks for the information and I will keep reading and learning!

What I plan to do for my 1025 (with Yanmar engine) is to buy 3 quarts of Castrol Edge at my VW dealer for when I change the 1025's oil. They sell it for $8/qt, which is less than Mobil 1 ESP, and I cannot find any Mobil 1 ESP except on line for nearly $13/qt. Castrol Edge is 5W30. This matches the chart requirement in the owner's manual. Wish I could get 0w30, but they don't formulate it to meet VW's 507 spec.

The only difference between a 0w30 and 5w30 is that the viscous is less at starting, or lower temperature, on the 0w30 but it's the same as running temperature.

Hi Ralph - the Castrol Edge 5W30 that I'm familiar with is an SN spec gasoline oil. Is that what your Yanmar calls for ?

No, the VW 507 spec is for diesel, with additives to deal with the exhaust filtration in the 2009+ models. The oil container is labeled ESP for exhaust system protection.

It didn't sound like the right oil to me, just wanted Ralph to double check.

Nope - Yanmar calls for 15W-40 or 10W-30 API CG. Have new JD 1026R. Do NOT use an automotive (API "S" class) engine oil in a diesel engine!! It does not have anywhere near enough dispersant additive to hold diesel soot blowby in suspension, and will plate-out and cause valve train wear.

Came across some LiquiMoly today in a Napa. 5W40 Diesel. Not cheap. I'm going to research it further, but mentioning it now for the poster that was looking for older spec oil - this LiquiMoly is CF rated.

IE. not suitable for new emission diesels, but may suit for an old application. Rgds, D.

The 5w30 Castrol Edge is for the VW TDI clean diesels.

According to the charts in my 1025 owner's manual (and same in the 4010 manual), a xw30 oil is fine unless you live in very hot parts of the country, like Arizona, New Mexico and southern parts of Texas. It's certainly fine in a VW TDI.

German castrol as it is called is one of the thickest 5 w30 on the market. At the top end of both ratings.

Thanks Ralph - I don't know the new tDI's, and am somewhat confused about how Castrol is marketing this oil. Does this Edge have a C_ spec, or just VW and Euro specs for diesel use ?

I guess I didn't understand your first post - are you planning on using this Edge in your Yanmar ?

I have to admit, that when it came time to perform my Kubota B2320's 50-hour initial service, all I remember having looked at were the recommendations for viscosity in my owners manual, and not necessarily the letter grade that it recommended.

That being said, I will have to go out later and look to see if I flubbed it, or if the guy who watches out for the mechanically- uninclined was sitting on my shoulder helping when I did my oil shopping.

But in the meantime, since we're all here, and as I am maybe noted for asking stupid neewb questions, I have to ask:

1) Given my Orange tractor's approx 50+ hours of occasionally and intermittently strenuous use mixed with a lot of light duty use, since that 50-hour service, should I order the new engine now, or wait for the explosion?

and

2) When I (if I even need to) change out the whimpy substandard oil intended for gasoline engine for an appropriate diesel flavor, do I need to change the earl filter too?

Thanks,
Thomas

The latest Castrol SLX Professional LLO3 SAE 5W-30 with VW 507 certification, purchased from the VW dealer, shows it is manufactured in the EU. It doesn't have the API Service Symbol “Donut”.

This question comes up every now and then, so you are not the first and won't be the last.

The consensus seems to be that it probably has not hurt the engine to run only 50 hours on a S rated, or non-C (compression ignition) rated oil.* That said, I would change the oil and filter before using it again.

Several big box places carry the Shell Rotella 5w-40 T6 Synthetic API Service Category: CJ4. There are many other fine oils that will also fit the bill.

*One of the additives in the C rated oils deals with soot, which is not really a problem in gasoline engines. 50 hours on any good oil is probably not going to load the oil up with soot.

Thanks. Don't know these Euro Castrol products, as the are not usually on the "normal" retail shelves in Canada (Walmart, CTC, parts jobbers....). Rgds, D.

^What he said.

One nice thing about Rotella T6 is that it is a Fleet diesel oil - meaning that it is also S_ (SN today I think) rated for gasoline engine use. Nice to have around, in the event somebody just grabs it to top up "whatever", gas or diesel. Mostly pointing out the "Fleet" class of diesel oil (there are others around), not trying to make this a T6 lovefest.

Though I do like T6 .

Change oil+filter with good diesel oil, don't sweat it.

Actually, you can find German Castrol at China mart, and Canadian tire also. My local car quest has it, they do sell a lot of it.

I'll snap a pic of a label next time i am through.

Interesting. I don't drive anything at the moment that takes these modern Euro specs, but am wanting to know more about the offering.

I plan to use the Castrol Edge in my 1025 because it's the only xw30 oil that I can get that's diesel rated. Every other diesel rated oils available around here (and even in Ohio where I checked some) are xxw40 oils. My temperature chart shows I don't need a 30w, and I want to save fuel by using xw30. Going to 0w20 in my Tacoma has really improved the fuel mileage on it.

Speaking of Euro.... wanted to toss these in here.

(N. American diesel oil newbies reading along..... stick with our local Rotella, Mobil 1, Castrol etc offerings for a while - anything that meets your OE manual's oil specs. I don't want to add to the confusion......).

I came across these in a Toronto area Napa parts store. I couldn't find the PDSheets on either the German or American site for LiquiMoly, so I emailed the factory.

Apps guy got back to me very quickly, with these 2 pdfs.

One is dual rated, one not. I find the CF rating interesting, as it sounds like these are formulated for recent generation Euro diesels - perhaps they just didn't bother submitting for later API testing..... comments welcome, will dig around on BITOG another night.....
