You're high and not right.
In my state, the public utility that manages the San Juan power plant is converting the coal generation facilities to natural gas. They made a public statement in the Albuquerque journal that using natural gas would save $10-15 million dollars in annual operating costs.

Debatable. Nuclear is better but coal still has it's place in the grand scheme of things. I read the decision FYI.
I guess coal has a place if you are ok with higher electricity costs.

Dare I ask...do you believe that?

Yep. Coal is expensive. Mining, long distance transportation, plant clean up and disposal of toxic waste. Natural gas is just a pipeline for transportation, no plant cleanup or toxic waste disposal, and per btu it’s cheaper than coal. Wyoming is stuck on coal because it’s the primary industry. Natural gas is abundant and cheap. There is no reason for coal when other options are both cleaner and cheaper. NG plants can also be ramped up immediately based on need and coal plants require 24 hours to bring up to operation.

I assume that the power company knows more about their business plan and financial costs than you and I. I assume they wouldn’t issue a press release in the business section of the newspaper with false information. I’m not riding any horse; I’m reporting what the power company has stated. Raw fuel prices don’t account for the differences in operating costs of running a power plant. Maintenance, operation, fuel delivery costs, and waste disposal (none) are significantly cheaper for gas.

Never in the history of mankind has NG been cheaper than coal.

I don't how else to put it nicely, but like the old saying goes. There is a sucker born every minute.
