( Well, fill up the tank now, or wait??? I only have a 500 gallon diesel fuel tank, but I'm about down to 100 gallons. For obvious reasons, I do not use as much fuel over the winter than during the summer. With prices changing as much as they do now, do I fill now, or wait until I'm out?
A year or so ago I filled up at $.82 (off road) in the fall; added Stabil to the tank and didn't really need much until spring. That spring the price was $1.29 per gallon for the same stuff. That saved me well over $200 bucks by filling up in the fall. With prices seeming to be high now, I ask; fill up now or wait until spring?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif )
Diesel is refined from crude oil. Hence, the price of diesel at the pump is directlly related to the price of crude. If anyone knew for sure what the price of crude was going to be even one month in the future, they could make a fortune in the futures market.
I find crude oil for a living. My employer (and all other oil companies) watch the price of crude oil and natural gas very carefully, and some pay good money for really smart people to try and predict the price of crude in the future. I'm not privy to the expensive predictions, but from my point of view there are a lot more reasons for the price of crude to go up than there are for it to go down for the next several years at least. Crude oil has always been cyclic, but I don't think we'll ever see $18/barrel oil ever again in my lifetime and it was there about a couple of years ago.
Here is a pretty good web page with some historical perspective on crude oil prices if you're interested.
Bottom line, if I had a deisel storage tank, I would fill it now. I do have 1000 gallons of Propane storage capacity, and I filled those last month.
