Back when I was working as a Plumber's Apprentice (should have stayed in that field!!) in the late '60's, I'd see small bonfiles lit under the crankcase of the Catepillars. '68 was a cold year..that's the only way we could get some of them started.
The Ford backhoe I operated even had a place on the dash to insert a can of starter fluid. The operater could push up on the can which then sprayed the fluid into the cylinders.
BTW, that's also where I learned the kerosene trick.
