Back when I was working as a Plumber's Apprentice (should have stayed in that field!!) in the late '60's, I'd see small bonfiles lit under the crankcase of the Catepillars. '68 was a cold year..that's the only way we could get some of them started.
The Ford backhoe I operated even had a place on the dash to insert a can of starter fluid. The operater could push up on the can which then sprayed the fluid into the cylinders.

BTW, that's also where I learned the kerosene trick.

Try running your glow plugs for two, ten second cycles. I have a New Holland that for some reason does not want to start either. I complained to the New Holland dealer and that is what they told me to do. Mine sits in a 50 degree heated garage and I sometimes can't get it to take off with on cycle on the glow plugs. If it sits outside I have to run three cycles on the glow plugs. Makes a big difference. Call you dealer first to see if your tractor glow plugs can handle that

If it doesn't want to start at 50 degrees in the shop, you must have a problem, that you need to look at. You shouldn't need glow plugs at the temp.

JOHN: just curious as to why some have problems with gelling and hard starting? my b2400 sits in the garage(unheated) and the last 2 times i had to plow snow the temp was 8deg and 10 deg. i gave the glow plugs about 15 sec. and she fires right up, one puff of smoke and clears right up. the fuel i have in there now was probably purchased in oct. and i have not had a problem with gelling(thank the lord) have i just been lucky?

I have started my B2910 in -5 degree f temps with about 20 seconds on the glowplugs. I had a block heater installed when I bought the tractor and have never plugged it in. The dealer told me I'd never use it... I figured for 60 bucks I'd be safe...

The dealer was right... Never used it...

I often think about using the block heater not for starting but easing the stress on the machine in cold weather..

It's got to be hard on the machine for the first couple of minutes when it's that cold.

I use the block heater for that reason. No problem starting with the glow plugs but running the heater for about an hour or two shortens warm up time, eases starting, and HAS to be a lot kinder to the engine. I use the timer method, just set it for about 2 hours before I plan to plow. Course it's been hovering around 0 F for the last week or so, kind of gettin' a little old.........
