Oil & Fuel Dire fuel predictions

I remember pulling up to the gas island at Eller's Grocery in Chesterfield county, VA with my briggs powered minibike back in the late '60's. Had to go inside and get the attendant to come out and pump 5 cents worth of gas! When I graduated to a Yamaha mini enduro, then Honda SL125, I would always wait until I had to switch the fuel petcock to reserve before filling up. If I fueled before going on reserve, I could not get it to take a full quarters worth. I can't remember what the price per gallon was, but it must have been in the mid 20's.

I don't recall ever selling a nickel's worth, but had lots of customers buy a quarter's worth of gas. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif In fact, when I was a teenager with my first car, I frequently bought gas two bits or four bits at a time. And in the late '50s/early '60s we expected several customers a day to request a dollar's worth. And our "profit" on a gallon of gas was 3 cents which was only expected the pay the overhead. The profit came from oil (11 to 12.5 cents per quart), filters, wash jobs ($1), grease, flat repairs, etc. And, of course, according to some of the trade magazines at the time, 50% of the service stations in the country either went out of business or sold to a new owner annually. We made a decent living at it by having the right location, providing excellent service, and by not leaving it with employees working for minimum wage; either myself or my dad was always there so it was some long hours for the amount of money made.

Ian I got a deal. only 73.9 this morning on the way home from work. Couple weeks ago a Zehrs foodmart opened a gasbar and the price was 61.9 .

Actually the price of cude has not been constant around $30 for the past couple of year. Crude was $20/bbl in the beginning of 2002 and is $32/bbl now.

Wholesale #2 diesel this morning with taxes $1.4982.
Has been going up. Jan 5, 2004 was a $1.3301.

The price has been up too 0.92 $ a liter here recently, that is 3.48$ Cdn per USgal. At the current exchange, about 3$ a gallon.

Right now it is 0.84 $ a litre, 3.18$ a USgal.

Oh well, my tractor runs on gas and I can make alcohol to run it with if I have to. My observation is that in the last 20 years gas prices have not risen as much as most everything else has. I expect the biggest rises in fuel prices after the November elections.

In 1964, my dad would send me to the Sinclar station (Dino) with a gallon gas can and a quarter to buy a gallon of gas (was 24.9 a gallon at the time). It was about a mile walk each way. I would always get 23 cents worth of gas and treat myself and brother to a bazoka joe bubble gum. Dad never noticed (at least i think!).

I'm no fuel price expert but I have been working in Europe recently and seen prices much higher there than the low $1.70/gallon we enjoy here. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Recent prices in Germany have been more than $4.14/Gal - (0.87 Euro/Liter)(3.78L/Gal)($1/0.79Euro). Prices in many other countries are even higher. I do not understand how we have consistantly been able to enjoy these lower prices nor how this trend can continue indefinately.

I'm very happy to be back in our great country. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I did however sell my 5.9 Liter Durango (13.5MPG) in Europe and am considering buying a 45 - 50 MPG Jetta diesel wagon. It's no wonder you see many more diesel powered automobiles in Germany than gasoline.

Pump price here last night was $1.649/gal. I'll be interested to see what my heating fuel price is when I get a delivery in a few weeks.
