I wanted to share the end of the story. Two different people responded to my craigslist Ad and between the two of them they took all of it! Several more people responded who would have taken some.

I was amazed anyone would want it. But I guess having free fill delivered meant they didn't care too much what it looked like. It was about as bad as it could get. There were steel car rims in it, sheets of tin, glass, shingles, cloth, wire, etc.

I think Craigs List can move anything a guy doesn't want anymore.

I guess so! It's almost as good as my magic road. What is my magic road, you ask? LOL!

I replaced 2 toilets in the house. Set both toilets out on the road and within 2 days both were gone.

I had a tangled piece of electric fence wire. Maybe 20 feet or so. Half of a rusted charcoal grill base. A few strands of other loose wire. I'd be surprised if all together it weighed a pound. Set it on the road, within 3 days it was gone.

Had some canister lights I replaced. Put on road...gone.

I've stuck stuff on the road, went to get more stuff and before I got back to the road it was gone.

That reminds me of what a neighbor told me once. He had an old refrigerator that still worked but wife wanted an new one so he set the old one on the curb with a sign,"FREE " and not one person stopped to inquire. After about a week, he put a "For Sale $50" sign and it was stolen the first night. Go figure that one.

.

If something doesn't disappear right away, try putting a sign with a price on it...then it will likely be "stolen" pretty quickly.

I have a place like that I throw all my old metal there. By the next day its gone.
It keeps me in the good graces of the meth heads. I figure give them the old metal before they come looking for the copper.
(neighbors house was robbed off all the copper pipe.)

Hi Guys,

As I got into that pile further I found what looked like fiberglass cloth and it had spread all over the ground from working the pile. When you crushed it in your fingers, it turned to white dust. If you picked it up, white powdery like dust filled the air.

Needless to say, that made me rather concerned. It wouldn't burn either. So I got out some brand new fiberglass cloth I have and tested it and it wouldn't burn either. That was good news because then it was possible it was fiberglass backing from the shingles and not asbestos. The thing is...I've never seen fiberglass powder like that when it gets old.

I took 2 samples to a lab today ($50) and it came back negative on asbestos. Was well worth the piece of mind it gave me.

But it goes to show that you need to be cognizant of what you could be digging up. I learned a valuable lesson and am very appreciative that you guys pointed out that there could be some nasty stuff in there. I've been wearing a cartridge respirator when I work. It helps keep the dirt/dust out of my lungs, too.

I'd need 10 dumpsters for what I had on hand. No, can't do the dumpster option. But I did find someone who wanted 30 yards of it for fill so now I'm down to about a half a pile!

That must be a real curiosity for the neighbors.... Guy on a tractor wearing a repirator digging into a dirt pile. Better watch out or you might have the EPA show up and declare your house a superfund site.
