DIY skidding winch build

I wouldn't doubt the guides helping. I had plans to put some on mine after I did initial testing, but I never could decide where exactly they'd go, or how'd they work. How critical are the angle and distance from the spool? No idea.

The motor says it'll do 4650 inch-pounds of torque, and given a 2.25" diameter drum, the winch equation (4650/(2.25/2)) roughly 4000lb of pulling force on the rope. Which is certainly respectable, will pull the tractor around easily without having the ground feet engaged.

As for the never-ending rope discussion, the best I've found so far for my capstan winch is 3/4" Dacron. It's reasonably low-stretch, it takes a lot abuse and keeps going due to being so oversized, and best of all it's really cheap compared to the other fancy ropes out there.

Nice build. Could you give anymore details on the type of rope you are using please. I googled 3/4 Dacron rope and got all kinds of different variations of Dacron blends. A specific brand, part number, anything to help so I can get exactly what you are using. Thanks

Very nice build! The only question I have is, does having the capstan that high up make for issues? It seems to put a lot of stress on the top link, whereas if you had mounted it a little lower, the stress would have been spread more evenly to all 3 point arms, which would have also helped when you are pulling at an angle instead of straight behind the tractor. Having it higher up does force more pressure on the feet which is a good thing, but with my tractor, that top link is mounted with 2 bolts into the rear end. If you were to pull at an angle, almost all (major part anyway)of the stress would be pulling on a single bolt.
Just a thought for anyone considering building one similar!

A few months back I started a thread on a small hydraulic capstan skidding winch for my own personal firewood processing. The Norwood winch to exact Skid-Winch | Norwood
Some liked the idea and some didn稚 but I decided it would be perfect for my needs and wouldn稚 break the bank. With lots of research and questions I finally have a finished product. Here are some pictures. I have $900 into it and that is with the cost of the rear remotes I had to install. Missing in the picture are the drop legs that go into the two receiver hitches to stop the tractor from being pulled backwards. I tried it out for the first tome today and was quite impressed. I pulled my 600 lbs concrete counterweight off the pallet it was sitting on and across the yard with ease with the tractor at idle.
Which hydraulic motor did you use? Also what pump do you have on your tractor? I'm looking to build one of these as well and save myself some money as opposed to spending piles of money elsewhere. Thanks in advance.

The three point is designed for draft forces, not so much for buffing forces. So it isn't hurting anything, but a pulley mounted low and mounted high near the capstan would redistribute the load lower while the capstan is up high so you can stand without hunching the back while pulling your winch rope in. The professionally built capstan winches are all up high for ergonomic use and engineered based on load bearing draft forces with no issues to the top link.

Thanks guys.
Scooc according to the valve instructions, once the power beyond sleeve is installed in the “T1” port the “T2” port has to be used to take the fluid from the cylinder back to tank. I’m no hydraulic guru so I was just following the instructions.
Very nice build btw. What capstan drum did you get?
