Guys,

I have been in the process of building a small trailer with a hydraulic tipping ram. I have just acquired a single and a double acting hydraulic ram for nothing. I was hoping on maybe using a power steering pump from a car which would reduce cost.doesn't really justify itself to spend all that money. Has anyone done this before. Also would a 4 port 3 position control valve be hard to locate on old machinery. Finally would you find pressure relief valves on old machinery too and if anyone could pinpoint particular machines I would really appreciate it. Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated.

Yes, automotive power steering pumps work well as hydraulic pumps. I have been using one on my 63 year old Case tractor (did not originally come with hydraulics)- its done well for 4 years. I am using a saginaw type pump with integrated 1 quart reservoir- the type that was put on 75-85 chevy trucks. This units have a built in relief valve (about 1200 psi). You will need to extend the reservior so that you don't run out of fluid- I am using a 1 gallon extention- I found a plastic juice jug that had a neck the same size as the filler neck on the pump and then joined the two with a neoprene band (the type that plumbers use to attach and seal 2 blunt ends of pipe). You put a small hole in the bottom of the upside down plastic jug and you now have a 1.25 gallon reservior on your pump (this will be plenty of capcity once you get both ends of your hydraulic cylinders full of oil). And if the jug is clear like mine- you have the added benifit of always knowing how much hydraulic oil is remaining /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
As for finding the 3 position valve at a salvage yard- yes I paid $45 for a double valve with open center. It supposedly came off a road paving machine, but the salvage yard just had a pile of them that they had already removed. Be careful that you avoid the closed center valves if they just have a big a pile of valves.

Just wanted to prove it worked before I tore it apart. The hinge support i-beam was tore loose from frame runner while trying to raise. No big deal just unload by hand. (dam the luck) repossission bed and reweld with gussets.
