Hey Y'all!

I was going thru some pictures and found this. This guy built this dump utility trailer and I was so impressed that I took these two pictures in hopes of one day building one too. I do remember the guy saying it's a 5hp engine. I can't remember what the big tank is for. Is that the hydraulic resevoir? Reason I ask is becasue I'd like to build a smaller version and was wondering basically is that all one needs, an engine, a resevoir, the hydraulic arm, the control, and the hydraulic pump? I have 3 of the 5 items laying around. And is there anything else that can be used for a resevoir? At any rate though, I think this guy did a pretty decent job of doing it himself and it worked great.

Yeah, it looks like he used an old freon tank for his hydraulic resevior. Neat set up except that have to start the engine every time you want to use the dump. Ithink that I woul have gone wit an electric/hydraulic unit.

This may be a little better pic of the elect/hyd unit. Pretty simple to hook up and is a little cheaper than buying a pump,engine, valve and resivoir

I prefer to use gas engines.I always have them around and no charging...

Used the same setup for the truck...

wow! cool pics of the trailers. That blue one is about the size I'm wanting to build. As for the gas vs. electric, I'd probably go with electric too if I didn't have so many small engines layin around. Our 17 year old son sometimes appears to be a magnet for small engines and he loves tinkerin with them. I think at last count we have about 7 or 8 small engines (that are not in use) rangin from 5 to 12 horsepower. We have about another 4 or 5 that are in use (lawnmowers, go cart, etc.). And Bobodu, is there anyway to get some close up pics of your blue trailer, especially the engine set up part, the hydraulic set up, and the arm set up, and what did you use for the resevoir?

And any words of wisdom, tips and tricks, and what not to do is always greatly appreciated.

I agree the light duty dump bed look great. At this point I have to apologize at appearing to be a wet blanket. But, for my uses those dumps would never last. I really load with rock filled dirt, then go over torture test track roads. I would like a trailer dump and it would have a steep dump angle to get the dirt slide, but, I've pretty much come to the conclusion that the amount of iron it would require to do the given tasks I'll have to just reealvuate my projects. I do keep studying the trailers though, maybe someday.... bjr

Dont overlook sheet plastic as a wood or steel bed lining alternative.

Dont know about cost difference yet.

Nat or anyone who can help,
Where did you get your elect/hyd. unit? Is it a one piece unit with tank or is that separate? I'm looking to get one for my tilt bed trailer. The power units I see at Graingers and Northern vary.
I need a 12 volt unit (Haldex / Barnes) for a single acting cylinder.
Power up, hold in up position, and gravity down.
I see most units come with a built in 3 qt. reservoir. Is that enough to raise a cylinder 16-18"?
Which unit should I look for?
The cylinder I'm looking at is 26" clevis to clevis with an 18" stroke and piston dia. of 1 1/2"
I can get the cylinder at TSC, Graingers, or Northern.
