While I was dispatching I had a partner who was adamantly against wearing them. He used the same thing "got thrown out and survived". I never could understand how anyone in that job could refuse to see the benefit of wearing them when they handled fatal accidents regularly with fatality due to no belt. He did learn about the 'thrown clear' bit though. He was killed in just such a way a year after retiring.

The Chief Medical Officer for our county EMS system was an older, well respected Emergency Physician. He died when his car spun out of control and crashed.
He was said to not be wearing his seatbelt, and had a "cheater" plugged into the seatbelt to prevent the alarm from ringing. It was said the crash would have been survivable if only he had worn his seatbelt.
A lot of Emergency Physicians, Nurses, Firemen, and Paramedics were pretty upset with him - he should have known better 10x over.

I never have been thrown out of one, but I did leave an imprint of my face in the roof just above the windshield, crushed the steering wheel, and left 2 dents with my knees in the dashboard of an old 1955 Chevy. Took the front end to the windshield and shoved the transmission into the back seat. The doctor said the only reason I lived was I was asleep when I hit the other car. The other driver was not injured as he was just leaving the light moving at about 5 miles an hour when I hit him. He had one extreme acceleration episode.
I had spent about a week after work staying up till 1:00 AM or so in the morning preparing the car for painting. Sleeping about 2 1/2 hours a night. Needless to say I fell asleep at the end of the week and rearended some one. One of the stupid 18 year old stunts. Thought I could do without sleep for a while. Never ever attempted that move again.

I can't believe that when we were kids my brother and I would fight over who got to lay up in the rear window ledge on a long trip!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
If a police man caught a parent letting their kids do that now I can't imagine the consequences.
The other thing that we liked to do was to sit up on the arm rest in the middle of the front seat so we could see out the front window. If we would have gotten into an accident it would be like lifting off of a launching pad right through the window!
