Just curious if anyone adds anything to their diesel fuel for the winter months?

There's a number of quality fuel additives on the market. I'm not necessarily a "brand" snob at all... I am familiar with what has worked for me over the year's and what is readily available (on the road - at home). So, I don't have to "hunt" for fuel conditioner when I need it - I use Power Service.

I use Power Service white bottle. I buy it at Advance Auto or Walmart.

Lots of posting son this subject so you can find many preferences. Also consider winter fuel. May have to ask around where it can be purchased.

In 12 years, have never used anything.

I've used a lot on a lot of different vehicle and the one that I can really tell the difference is the RED LINE.

Some guy did test on the net and showed it dissolve soot compared to the other brand that did nothing to clean the fuel system.

I can tell when I'm using it and the times I run out and am not running it.

Red Line does not use any harmful alcohol based thinner such as Amsoil. in its products which can be too reactive.Red line relies on the synthetic base lubricator to lubricate and maintain the injection systems, negate any water build up in the fuel if any occurs, the agent gently dissolves any carbon build up if any as it acts as a anti carbon build up on valves and piston crowns which may damage valve ports, etc and block injector jets to an irregular spray pattern.

I can under stand that in parts of the US and Canada where low temps are experienced and the use of a lesser quality winter grade with lower below required Cn values,Red line RL 85+ and RL 85 anti gel would be of more importance as to it's anti gelling properties and extra cetane value for the boost for a higher fuel burn.
Red-line for my vehicles has proved itself over the four full years of use to assist in maintaining my engine to it's original OEM specifications, with out any issues or injectors leaks rust or carbon build up etc.
Might pay to read this local write up, maybe better than others available from Red Line outlets. It's not everyone's solution, for me it's proved itself and that is what counts at the end of the weeks work a reliable diesel engines.

Stanadyne Performance formula. Works great and yes it does benefit your engine and fuel system. Because someone has not used any and not had any problems? does not mean it is not beneficial.

Powerservice is what I use. You will find as many opinions on this, as you will on which oil to use.

Like stated above, depends on the quality of your supplier. If you are in doubt, add some powerservice (white bottle).

That brings me to the fuel itself.

No matter what the brand of tractor, the engines all operate the same and ULSD is just that, low sulfur and sulfur lubricates pumps and injector pintles so I always add CAT lubrication additive to every load of fuel that gets delivered.

Better safe than sorry....

I like that- don't need to hunt for things and use what works for you.

I have used white PS too, this was before TSC opened near me and now I have other brands available to me like howse. Why switch if PS works just fine. I have NOT come across any negative issues using it no matter what the hearsay is.

PS (White and Emergency Red) is standard issue to all our fleet drivers in the winter. Every truck has at least 2 bottles in the cab side compartment.

It works, it stinks and it's inexpensive.

I do, it is called "Diesel fuel".
I add it when the gauge approaches "E".
On the small tractor I add about 5 gallons, which is a convenient can size.
The bigger ones usually get a transfusion from the truck, unclear how many gallons at a time, maybe 15 or 20.

Around here (North East USA) it can be unwise to leave a diesel with summer blend in it much past December 1st.

I don't have to,but I add Power Service also.
I think it boosts the Cetane a bit.
I get my diesel where I get my gas (Sunoco) and I've never had a problem:thumbsup:

Havent used anything for 20 years

what benefit would there be

would the tractor feel better

I use marine grade stabil in all my gasoline powered engines. You need to today, but you did not before they put up to 10% ethanol in the gas. Ethanol is what they call hydroscopic, so it attracts water. I'm pretty good about putting fresh gas in my stuff when I change oil in the fall and put it away, but I've had problems the past two years that I attribute to the ethanol in the gasoline. I had a seeded last year with a B+S 13 HP engine that would not run this spring, even though I drained the gas. I think the little that was left in it attracted water and it formed little jelly balls in the carb, along with some rust, something I have never seen before.

nope...ive had diesels for about 20 years, and while i do use a winter blend in the cold climates, i never add any fuel additives. Never had any issues.

Some of us run #2 fuel oil, so there is no anti-gel additive making an additive a must in the winter.

Winter blend is just that. Your oil company is pre-adding anti-gel, keroscene or some other additive.

ULSD is like ethanol. Green mandated crap.

I use winter bottle PS in the winter and Silver bottle PS in the summer.
I have 3 diesels, a Dodge Cummins, a VW Jetta TDI(CR), and my tractor.
There has been alot of discussion on TDIClub about fuel lubricity(or lack thereof) contributing to a number of High pressure fuel pump failures in the TDIs. I really don't want to spend $8-10K replacing the WHOLE fuel system in the TDI if it is related to fuel lubricity so I run the PS. Part of the problem (at least with the TDI) is that the maker of the fuel pump(Bosch) spec'ed the system to run with 460 max wear scar test fuel and most if not all fuel sold in the US is allowed to have a 520 wear scar.
