Do YOU have a flail on your BX25?

gpdixon, Excuse me for being lame, I found the PTO rating for
a BX22. It is 16.7 HP for your PTO

So if your running 16.7 HP and turning that 48" I
guess it is fair to say the BX25 at 17.7 will turn
it as well or better.

By any chance do you have any You-Tubes of it?

Nope. I'm probably one of the last folks that don't use You-Tube, Facebook, Twitter, don't have a cell phone, no iPad, or anything else of the sort.

gw utube is an INCREDIBLE learning tool, not just a movie machine.
Your really missing the boat on that one. Facebook and twitter, yes,
no time from me either, IPAD, it is AWSOME on the road or working
w/ clients making selections etc but UTube is a winner, you should
reconsider IMHO. Case and Point, I can tell you all day how cool a
FEL grapple is a on a BX25 but you can't really understand the deal
till you see it in action, CLICK HERE . I can tell you all day long how
neat a canopy is for a BX25, espically with the radio center I built
for it is but until you see it in action, you really don't have a clue.

You can search for things like lets say you wanted to buy a flail,
well, just search for the flail you want to buy and maybe you will
see it in action! Same holds true for almost ANYTHING!

Maybe I should have said that I don't input to U-tube. On occasion I do use it to learn welding techniques, how to remove a FEL from a BX, some music videos, and that kind of thing.

I agree that visual reinforcement is an excellent learning tool. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million words.

Do YOU have a flail mower on your BX25?
If so what model did you buy and would you buy the
same size flail again? Are you under powered?
What size is your flail as well...please. ?

Did you ever purchase a flail mower? If not why and if so what did you purchase?

Artisan, loved your grapple video. I know it has been there for a while, but I had not seen it before. I finally got an EA "wicked" grapple for my Kioti, and it is great. Grapples add another dimension to tractor work. Hope things are going well for you. I haven't heard from you in a while.

I know I'm really late to this thread, but I see you're still thinking about a flail. I had a 48" New Holland that I got used (but excellent condition) for $1800. Kept it 6 months and then sold it, for $1800. From the videos I had seen I was hoping to use it for cutting light brush and as a finish mower. Almost worked. Right after mowing a few strips down the yard it seemed like it would be fine, but the following day I saw rows of uncut grass where the tractor wheels were. The wheels pushed the grass over and the flail passed pretty much right over it. The flail rotor turns so that the blades are traveling in the same direction as the tractor, so it doesn't pick up the bent over grass and cut it, it just lays it down even more, more or less. Tried different height settings and still could not get it looking good. I wish there was a way to reverse the rotor direction - I might still be using it. As for mowing brush, it still had strips where the wheels were but not too bad. And another thing, that mower would NOT cut straw! Had to make several passes to even look like it had been cut. Other stuff it cut pretty good. It even turned a cinderblock to powder.

^^ Tire striping is very common with a mower of any kind, flail or rotary. Reversing the rotation of the cut would not help. Plus, there is not the vacuum effect that is found on rotary (bush hog) style mowers. You found that out when you tried different settings and it didn't help. Just figure you'll have to mow again in a day or two to get the tire marks.

Flails really don't like tall grass or hay/straw very much. It has a tendency to wrap the long stuff around the shaft. I am surprised that it did well mowing brush because the light blades are designed to swing out of the way when hitting something substantial. Maybe you went very slowly and it caused it to work better.

The other issue may be the kind of blades on the mower. There are finish knives and rough cut knives that are designed for different conditions. Which kind does your mower have?
