This horse has been flogged to death, time to bury it. The next time that an online discussion changes somebody's mind will be newsworthy, as it will be the first. Meanwhile, I need to go feed the chickens. :D
In all seriousness, this while concept of post VS non-posted where I live and Maine came up on TBN many years ago. I couldn't believe it, until someone (I forget who, maybe you!) explained it to me. So, yes, it was an on-line discussion that changed my mind. Didn't make the news, though. ;)

HOLD ON THERE!!!

Does this mean you aren't supposed to steel livestock that eats purple corn????????

At the end of the day, if you're walking on property that is marked no tresspassing, is it really any different than steeling livestock who eats purple corn other than the livestock has monetary value to the owner you took the livestock from?

Don't get me wrong, if your lost, your lost, or if survival depends on it for any reason, I get it as far as crossing land. However, if you see a "no tresspassing" sign and you intentionally ignore it on your own whim to do what you want to do, it's really no different than steeling IMO and knowing you will not getting caught.

I've pointed this out many times in this thread and others; the liability aspect is mostly BS.
Also, it isn't trespassing if an allowed use.
It may be BS in your state but it is not in others.

The NC Extension office has a document that states that posting your land makes it very difficult to be sued because the person trespassing is committing a crime. It is hard to sue someone if they get hurt while committing a crime. If one leases out their land for some person, one increases one's risk of liability.

Early in the life of TBN there was a poster named CowBoyDoc. He posted a couple of incidents regarding landowner liability, one of which was in SC. In the SC case, two people rode horses onto someone's land that was NOT posted. One of the horses stepped into a hole which threw the rider who was hurt. Said rider sued the landowner. If the land had been posted that lawsuit would have not happened.

I have had people trespass my property while hunting. These two idiots were shooting in a manner that threatened my neighbors and my family. I am glad I had the land posted because they were on the land illegally and I could not be dragged into a civil lawsuit if they had hit something or someone.

I agree with you 1000%.

But - I still believe the rules are backwards. It should be illegal to go onto someone else’s land automatically. Why do no signs mean it’s unlimited access?

People should have to post “open land - come on in” v. have to post “no trespassing”.

I rarely see no trespassing signs in the city or in folks yards. Does that mean I can have a campfire on their lawn? Why do we have to post signs?

Hunting deer(or anything I guess) at night with lights.
We have heard used the term around here "jack-lighting deer" In other words poaching at night by using a good flashlight to light up the reflective eyes of the ungulates. Once spotted you poach them with a long barreled .22 rifle. You then field dress them on the spot quickly before the game warden "poaches" you and you skedaddle out of there. This is a time honored and successful tactic used for decades for the "have not's" to have some meat to eat. The reason for the long barreled and closed breach .22 rifle is that the longer the barrel and with a closed breach is that the lower the noise will be. You also use standard velocity NOT high velocity rounds. All shots taken are head shots. ALL of this is just hearsay of course.

Ok. Never heard.

I find it amazing all the terms using “Jack”.

- Jack (money)
- Jack-o-lantern
- Jack of all trades
- Jacks (the game)
- Jack in the box

It goes on for a long time.

Your up in the eastern end of the state. Come on down here in the "brush" in my end of the state, and I guarantee you that every one knows what "jack Lighting deer" is all about. Out in "booger county", it is the primary meat source for the poor.
