Unfortunately, we have done many projects in the immediate Newark area; that is one of the roughest cities hands down. We usually leave a man outside to watch the trucks and tools.

In the mid-late 70s when I was a field service tech I had one jobsite in Washington DC where the security guards would escort employees to their cars after dark. They worked in pairs so the guards didn't have to walk back alone.

Old maps are treasures.

We often still consult old Sanborn Fire maps of some cities for history of buildings and parcels in some towns.

They are indeed. A while back I came across an old map that showed that my house pre-dates the road I live on by about 50 years. Access was thru what's now woods behind the house, no trace of the road other than a short section that's now a snowmobile trail.

Old topo maps can be interesting, often showing roads which are invisible now. I've come across old camps that way, and once found a big junk of coal out in the woods on what apparently was a winter road for an old steam engine log hauler. Yet the only thing left of that road is a black line on a map.

Used to be the home of RCA. Still some factory buildings there.
Saddest place I’ve ever seen. Urban decay, drugs and crime.

I interviewed with a company once, every other question was
“Do you want to work in Camden?”
NO!!!!!!!!!

Yes, they were interviewing people in DC area, hoping someone was naive enough to say yes.

Yes, I also find these old maps are fun. We go to 1892 or so here; what I find fascinating is first how well mapped the area was, and second, how many more houses there were here then, many of them not on marked trails or roads. I have visited many of the old sites, where you can often see that it might have been chosen for a spring, or little ravine/draw, or patch of particularly fertile land.

Early 80s wife & I rented a car and took friends to NYC. At 2am I got lost and ended up in Harlem. Stripped cars everywhere, guys carrying wheels, etc in front of us. I see a police car up ahead. Two cops in it, driver drinking whiskey, passenger with sawed off shotgun! They see Virginia tags, driver says we don't want to be there. I ask directions to motel in upper East Manhattan. He said 'see that traffic light ahead? Turn right, count 36 lights. If they're red don't stop. Turn left...it's up ahead on right.'
The motel we stayed on top floor. Looking out window we see a couple bodies outlined in chalk on roof of next building.
"Welcome to New York" I tell friends.
Such a shame these horrible places in America which could be cleaned up, although it may be too late.

NYC has changed so much since the 80s, or 70s. Mostly due to property costs going sky high.
Camden has not changed much, Newark has specific directions you can go, don't veer off of them.

Trenton , the NJ capitol is not a place to be at night, even when at government buildings.

I grew up in NY, Bed Sty was a no mans land and you could get shot at driving through there during the day.
Now you see more couples with kids and business people and high priced condos.
