Sort of... inside.

When I'm not working on it, under the shed roof; in winter it sits right there with its snowblower on. Occasionally inside the garage. I, too feel that it's only prudent to take care of an investment that costs as much as a car, not only mechanically, but cosmetically as well, as much as is practical for a working machine.

There are still those who spend 20-30K on such a piece of equipment without ever washing it or considering how to keep it well maintained or preventing it from being dinged or damaged.

They buy it, use it and forget it, and it is amazing to me what makes them tick. After all it is a significant investment just like a car or a house and maintenance and condition in the end means more or less money in the owner's pocket.

You are going to have to get rid of that Coke sign... it clashes with the JD colors. :p

I spent more than that on mine and the only reason I ever wash it is to keep it from leaving muddy tracks on the garage floor. I follow the maintenance schedule , usually maintain at lower hours than called for.

When the dust & dirt buildup gets high enough to make my clothes dirty, I hose it out.

I have a business end in the front, and one in the back. They are both built for digging into dirt, rocks, gravel, and whatever else I need moved. This machine does not have to be cleaned & polished like a BMW roadster.

Of course we live here in God's country where the climate is kind and the gentle rain washes and washes And Washes AND WASHES the dirt away :D In fact, mine is out there being washed right now.

Mine is outside 99% of the time. Of course the paint was faded and rusty long before I bought it. When I finally put my barn up in a few years, she'll go inside.

I just sold my 1998 4100. The first question everyone asked was whether it ever sat outside. I almost never washed it, only when the dirt got too thick to get at things. But I never once left it out over night. After its first wax job ever it sold to the second interested party because "it was the cleanest looking machine" they had seen. Both parties said it rated the nicest machine they had yet seen. It looked almost new even with 700 hours. I also maintained it by the book. Even though I hardly ever spent time cleaning it the fact it was indoors kept it in good shape and payed at resale time. My point: all you gotta do is keep them indoors and do regular maintenance and they'll stay like new.

I keep our tractors in a garage. I have always felt that the sun really ages the finish on anything, but the biggest reason is for security. I have had neighbors who left their garden tractors and CUTs outside and woke up to find them gone in the morning. It's not a high crime area, but I think it pays to be careful.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you get for it?

BigC, I assume you were asking me about my 4100. I got $8K. Will never know if I could have got more since it sold to the second one who looked. I take that back, I also had a local farmer stop by when he saw it sitting by the road. When I told him what I was asking he laughed pretty histerically. He just bought a used 100 hp tractor for $4K. He obviously had no idea what these little ones go for. I didn't know him but I wish I'd see him again so I could rub it in a little.

My 4110 and TC55 NH are stored inside. The toys and cars cost too much to leave them out in the elements.

all of our stuff is always inside... wish i could say the same for the trucks and cars :/

The tractor occasionally stays outside, like once a month at best, in the shade and under cover. a few times its been on the trailer or at a site in the rain but not often... When i picked it up from michigan and drove it back to NJ on a 16' open trailer, it rained 80% of the way for the 700 mile trip, so when it "started" up when i got to NJ to unload it and put it in the 24' enclosed trailer, i felt a little re-assured lol.

i agree with most postings, it is an investment. that being said i bought it to use it, not sit there and look good. it's got some scratches and one small dent, but i do clean mine up after use and service it regularly of course. hey, nothing says it can't look good while being used. mine stays in the garage right next to the first car i ever owned (an old nova) that's in pieces waiting it's turn patiently...my wife doesn't understand why her new mini-van has to sit outside

Mine sits inside all the time. All the attachments are in for now but I am running out of room. We have a boat that sits out all summer and it drives crazy when the weather gets bad knowing it is outside. Car and truck are inside also.

In the 17 years I've owned it, it has spent less than 40 or so days outside, because I needed the inside space for a project. The loader has probably spent close to a year outside over that time, although I do store it inside when I can spare the space. You can readily see the difference in paint fade between the tractor and the loader.

Of course, the tractor spending its time primarily inside hasn't kept the crappy paint job from bubbling and peeling. Just last month paint flaking off the left foot rest took away the color code for the loader quick-disconnects.

Mine lives outside with a tarp over the hood and operator station. I keep the undercarriage and wheels free from mud build-up and follow the maintenance schedule...but it is a tool. Most heavy equipment sits outside for years without affecting the performance. My JD gets filthy in the woods and my dirty paws on the steering wheel and controls, etc. In the event I sell or trade it in, I'll clean it up a bit, but the maintenance log will be impeccable as well as the performance.
