If you want your dog to be warm to other people and family members, (especially children) YOU need to be warm to them with your dog at your side. Embrace the other person, then both show affection to each other AND the canine.

The message will get through.

" Others" means warm and welcome attention!

We tried the hugs ,back patting and kiss routine as everyone arrives and leaves (we would do
that with or without the dog being there, we're a huggy group of folks). However, I had the dog sit/stay and watch instead of having her "join in". I'll certainly try the : then both show affection to each other AND the canine. Good idea.

It's only 3 risers. If I put him in the middle, it's a crap shoot whether he goes down or back up. If we're at the top and I put his front paws on the middle, he goes back up. If we're at the bottom and I put his front paws on the first riser, he goes all the way up.

So far, the toys and treats don't work.

If we can EVER get him to do the 3-riser stairs, THEN we'll start working on the 5-riser stairs to get into our hi-boy bed. I am seriously considering installing ramps....
Is there room for a ramp? I put one in for my MIL, covering 50% of the stairs. Both dogs would take the ramp going up and take the stairs going down. I never figured out why....

A other issue I have with my lab is her eating habits, I pretty much gave up on it and we bought a slow feeder dog bowls.

I went with a ceramic ball in our rescue dog's bowl. Slowed him down a little. It's softball size. Labs will eat until they pop....

Who's a good boy? + a treat for positive reinforcement worked well for us. Heck, I've trained our cats to sit, shake hands, sit up, and high five.

why this feel like a condescending comment? yes positive reinforcement goes a long way and is one of the building blocks of training but not the only one and certain things are easer to trained then others … things like separation anxiety, hoarding, food inhalation (eating food like a vaccum) or some other thing that got mentioned earlier are not so simple to fix or work around.

He gets 1/4 cup (1/8 oz) Science Diet about 430 AM and the same thing at 330 PM. One small Milk Bone chewy treat about lunch time. Acts like he's starving at meal times.
When gypsy was being trained by a professional trainer, he suggested using chicken for the training treats. And that worked extremely well.

I would buy a 5lb bag of frozen boneless skinless chicken breast's. Boil up a pound or so at a time, and then chop them into small pieces for her training treats.

Boy those got her attention

just a note:

I had a very biddable Brittney Spaniel learn to BALANCE on a "bongo-board" in just three sessions using a "clicker". Of course, this was a couple of years after beginning treat/clicker training.

I had set the board on the floor, and got the dog animated around it. whenever his foot would touch the board, I would give a click. It took two sessions until the dog was standing four legs on the board placed on the floor.

On the third session the roller beneath the board was introduced. The results didn't take long! ;-)

Have you seen that internet video of the Pug riding the skate board? ;-)
