Double Tow

Semi trucks in OR pull tripple trailers... take about scarey... just watching them go down a mountain pass on I-5 makes you want to pull off the road.

They used to let truckers on the NY Thruway pull a pair of 48' trailers. The first time I saw that my jaw was dragging on the pavement.

About 2 years ago I saw an F350 dually pulling a big gooseneck horse trailer AND a 30' bumper-pull house trailer. This was in heavy traffic on rt 206 in Hillsborough. He was having trouble moving the load and was getting NO respect from Jersey drivers.

No way I would pull doubles in NJ or the northeast.

My stepfather looked into pulling doubles and from what he was told it goes by your home state. If they allow doubles/triples you can do so from state to state. I'm sure there will be some catches but from the replies its sounds legal and feasable. But just be careful of your weight. From what I've gathered your pulling your tractor on the GN and the dump empty. Then using just the dump when you get to the job. That sounds perfect. I don't have a dump for just that reason. I'm already at my max weight with just the GN. Good luck, Robbie

Your stepfather was given bad info. PA for one does not allow recreational or personal double towing.

As mentioned, double towing does come up in the RV threads. More than one has mentioned having to drop a trailer then come back for it later with just the tow rig.

They still do. There are service areas ajacent to many of the toll booths for breaking down the combo's in order to access local roads.

No big deal with the proper training.

I have a 20+5 Moritz gooseneck. It also has a receiver in the rear of the trlr, it is for raising and lowering the dovetail. The jack locks into the receiver and either raised or lowers the dovetail. Mine is not for towing, yours may not be either. The Old Gunny
