I was wondering what the maximum drawbar load is for the TC21D? How much weight can one drag? I would also like to know the maximum trailer loading weight.

Thanks

you know thats a good question.I looked through the owners manual...The only info I fond was "always tow from the hitch or lower 3pt arms in lowest position" DUUUUU!!!! but nothing about GTW of the tractor....If I had to guess I'd say around 1k or so....Wonder if the dealer knows...?You would think this would be in the owners manual.../w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif Maybe I just missed it but I don't think so...Mabye one of the B2400 folks can tell us what thier capacity is It should be close to that.

My first thought was to look in the marketing literature, nothing. Owners manuals, nothing. Then realized that this measurement is very variable. To be accurate it would need to be expressed in ft/lbs of torque applied to wheels. Someone here can probably convert the PTO hp to ft/lbs. Don't remember the conversion off the top of my head and don't have my handy dandy physics books nearby. I imagine that the automotive industry has some thoughts around how that would convert to capacity to tow a certain number of pounds on a paved road on typical axles having typical tires (all with typical friction forces at work).

Probably does not help too much but its my 2 cents anyway...

Frank, I haven't looked for that information in New Holland manuals, but my B7100 Kubota manual said a 1,000# trailer and my B2710 manual says a 3,000# trailer. Of course, remember that trailer towing ratings also take into consideration things like braking ability. As far as dragging a weight, too many variables; what's the shape of the weight, what kind of surface are you dragging it on, are you trying to pick up one end or dragging it with the whole weight flat on the ground, etc.? The heaviest things I've tried to pull have been trees, so I just hook a strong enough chain on it (be sure to keep it hooked low) and try it. If I can pull it, fine; if not, I spin my wheels a bit, then either cut it up with the chain saw or go get the neighbor's 85hp Oliver./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I don't have my owner's manual with me right now, but I seem to recall a 2000 lb trailer limit for the B2410, plus a limit for tongue load. The TC21 should be similar I would think.

As far as "How much weight can one drag?', I believe the answer is "However much weight that one can drag"./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif At least from what I can tell traction will be lost first. If the traction is good enough then you might stall the engine, though I've not seen this personally yet. I just don't think that you could get to a point where the drawbar/frame would be damaged from just pulling - that's what they are designed to do. One exception might be repeated shock loads, like stump-pulling from the drawbar. Otherwise the limit for a steady pulling load is just going to be whatever your traction will allow.

Thank you everyone for your input. For comparison purposes the Kubota BX2200 manual reports a Maximum drawbar load of 550 lbs measured at the drawbar and a Maximum loading weight for a trailer (excluding the weight of the trailer) of 1,765 lbs measured at the center of the trailer wheel.

This is all accademic of course, what I want to do is drag some fallen trees out of my woods. I got some great feedback when I asked how to go about this safely. Please see the Tractor Projects thread.

Frank, I would suspect the 550 pounds to be a vertical load. Like a tongue weight of a trailer. Horizontal drawbar pull is difficult to measure and more dependant on weight of tractor and traction of tires. It's a big part of the Nebraska testing on the big tractors. The max trailer weight is probably for braking. Not a big issue with dragging a log... unless you're going down a steep hill /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I towed a 15 ton trailer with a TN-65. It was properly ballasted but the tractor had no problems moving it. I had to hang it on a Cat 2 lift arm draw bar, we had 1500 lbs of ballast in the loader and the tractor motored around with no problems. You should have no problems moving 5 ton trailers with your tractor as it will not hurt the tractor unless you get careless.

In all of my years of tractor experience, I have never been concerned with how much can a drawbar pull. Tongue weight is a different matter. Traction and power are the main limiting factors. An exception would be pulling and experiencing "wheel hop". This occurs when pulling and the back end jumps up and down. This exerts extreme force on the drawbar and transmission and could damage the tractor. Also it can be difficult to maintain control of the tractor and people have been thrown off. When pulling a trailer the limiting factor is usually breaking abilty to stop the trailer, particularly going down hill.
