No not the Merriam-Webster kind - the seperation between grass and gravel kind.

How do you get a nice, clean, defined look between the grass and gravel on the driveway? Ours is ~ 1/4mi long btw.

My suggestion is to put in some type of plant that will define the drive...

personally I would go with a flowering bush...something like Forsythia or Hydranga...they are quite different but both can be unreal when they are in full bloom...either one can be started from cuttings so you can propagate them yourself...

The idea is with the drive lined with flowering shrubs you do not notice the line between the gravel and the ground cover...

A 12" border of plant material like Vinca, Euonymus or some low ground cover that is green year round, that doesn't mind being plowed up and comes back. Then fill in with wood chips - they deter grass growth while the ground cover takes hold. You can mow the vinca or other low plants back as they start to engage the lawn.

As pine states you can define it with Hydrangeas, - good if you dont have trees or leaves to clean up and these are 2-3' high or Forsythia, but these get 10-12' high and are a PIA to eradicate and require annual pruning to stay small - plus these will impede your snow plowing / pushing ability off the drive.

Curbing with PT wood or stone works too, but since youre in a snow zone this has its issues. I installed used granite curbing 4" Wide x 12" Deep x length and 1" or 2 above ground so 10" deep and you know when the bucket or blade hits it under the snow. Its relatively cheap here in NH as it comes in pieces from recon jobs in 2-3' sections.

Maybe one of those propane weed burner wands? I wouldn't plant anything except a very low, very tough ground cover unless you always blow your snow. Even then, if you get a wet snow that doesn't blow, you have to push it somewhere.

All good ideas, but nothing is going to last. That is, unless you want to spend an enormous amount of time maintaining it. Gravel and dirt move.

My drive is gravel and 1/4 mile long. I hand rake the edges (yes hand rake) and use generic roundup for the weeds in a garden sprayer. It is a fair amount of work keeping it up but it does look nice. Just had 48 tons spread the other day. $840.00:mad: Gravel drives are a constant battle.

That's what I was afraid of, but expected - a constant battle. It's not all bad I guess. Part of it really

We do now blow the snow - I just cock the grader blade to the side and make a few passes.

I've got a sprayer on the 4wheeler and some ROW (right of way) vegetation killer for the center hump. I'll use some weed killer for the edges incase it drifts into the lawn.

Thanks for the quick responses all - I sincerely appreciate it!
