Depends on how wet it is. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif In Nevada, when the stuff had time to dry out, I hauled trailer loads that didn't seem much heavier than feathers. However, if it was fresh, or when it rained or snowed on the load before I hauled it to the dump, my 5' X 12' X 16" dump trailer was heavily loaded - nearing the 7000 lb load capacity (including the weight of the trailer, of course). My dump trailer only had a hand winch from a boat trailer, so cranking it up to dump was only a little less work than forking it out by hand. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

This comes from Deere website:

Topsoil 1600#/cu yd
Loam earth 2100#/cu yd
Dry earth packed 2550#/cu yd
Wet earth excavated 2700#/cu yd
Dry clay 2500#/cu yd
Wet clay 2800#cu yd
So depending on amount of straw or saw dust it could range
from 1000#/cu yd to 2700#+/ cu yd.

Since you have builded a few already. I have a question for you or some one may be giving me some idea.
I have been doing some research on how to build a dump trailer myself. I am looking to build a 5'x10' dump trailer with side and rear panel removable and have been price out most of the material but having trouble finding the two big hinges that will hold between the dump box to bottom frame. I went to look at couple of new trailers at dealer shop they look very heavy duty. I wonder if there 's company out there that prefab those part? or the trailer manufactory fabricate themself.

I got heavy hinges for my trailer ramps from McMaster Carr. I thing those were made out of 3/8" material. I've loaded a Cat Backhoe on it and not had a problem.

I think this would be over kill on your design but maybe someone makes something a little lighter.

Trust me after using this trailer for several years, every load required some manhandling to empty, you do not want a trailer like this. Note this trailer is jacked and the shot represents the dumping angle, yet because the trailer tail hits the ground you can never dump a load without driving forward, getting out the shovel and scraping the bed. You want a trailer hinged at the rear of the frame. If you consider every Front end loader like a mini dump trailer, you can get an idea what kind of cylinder angles are required. Also a sissor lift due to the large bore and short throw requires a HD subframe and will weigh as much as your 4x7 trailer. I am sure I just saw somewhere on this site someone who had made a sweet dumper using two long stroke hydraulic jacks (like on a engine lift) plumbed to a electric hydraulic pack.

Here are the hinge pictures. Pic 1,2,& 3 are the hinges. Outside parts are 1/2" stock and the center is 3/4". Doesn't have to be that wide, I done it because I'm not going to put any grease fitting in them.
Pic # 4 is the frame, waiting until I get a Cyl. and # 5 is what the tail gate well look like. It swings out or you can take it off.
