I have a 6x10 dump trailer made by car mate and it dumps at a good speed but when it lowers it takes for ever I checked fluid and it's good is there anything I can do to make it come down faster?I know it's about saftey but man is it ever slow.
Thanks

Hi Bjess8, I'm no expert on hydraulics, so I'll keep the advise short.. let it be. Probably a lot safer, and more reliable. Plus easier on the trailer.

There may be a reducer/orifice in the return line. There may also be an adjustment for the flow. Things you could do, open the orifice somewhat. remove the restrictor/orifice. Install an adjustable ball valve in line such as this.

Do you have the instructions for the pump that came with the trailer?

Dump trailers are gravity down and hydro power up. Look for a adjustment on the down side of things. You should have a flow control valve or orifices that can be changed.

My dump has an adjustable flow valve for return fluid. Guarantee it is slow only when empty. Lower it full and it will rocket down. I set mine for a happy medium between full and empty lowering.

Not all are gravity down. Besides my home built, the trailer I took several idea photos from was also pwr up/dn, I just can't remember if it was a BigTex or a C&M, it even had the same Monarch pump as I have.

OP, my big dump has a 18k scissor hoist and it is gravity down and it is slower than dirt comming down also.

Sorry about that. I have used and been around 4 or 5 dumps and even sold 1 or 2 and all were gravity down. I guess there are other types out there but really don't see why you would need pressure down?

Got to be a way of slowing it down unless you like to slam the trailer frame alot. I like mine to just meet the frame nice and soft.

The advantage of power down is during winter time if you are in the transfer you can dump and be out of the way fast where as the gravity down when it is 30 out takes forever to lower. That is really the only advantage to power down on a dump trailer that I know of. Because of our cold weather our next trailer will have power down just because we use it a lot and that time waiting adds up.

I don't get it, if its slow to go down just reach down for the little wheel and open up the return. Soooo simple. No power down needed. Why would a mfg put the extra expense of a 2 way pack when a simple adjustable relief is all that is needed.

My 5 ton 6x10 EZ dumper is power down, never gave it much thought but it must be for more than just quicker return in cold weather,
I remember the salesman making a pitch about how it helps when loading a machine up on the ramps, preventing the bed from lifting, I think that's what he said.

It does make it nice to bring it down snug against the frame, makes for a quiet ride, no bouncing or banging. Probably safer when you have a machined tied down inside for that same reason.

There is no wheel to adjust the relief on my dump trailer.

Most of the hydraulic power pacs made for dump trailers use power up and gravity down. Most, like the Haldex/Barnes have an open line so when the pump is running the cyl is extendingand then hold till the lower solenoid is activated. When it is activated a small electromagnet pulls a ball off it's seat to allow fluid to escape. On such a system there is no way to increase flow so what you have is what you got!
I've built several dump trailers and have used these systems for them. They aren't perfect but for the price they can't be beat even though they are slow coming down , at least they don't slam down. The last one I sold, a single axle 5 x 10, I worked better if I stepped up into the front of the empty trailer to help speed up the lowering. HTH, later, Nat

I bought a dump trailor last fall primarially for firewood and sawlogs, this trailor has a gravity drop. It worked great last fall when the temp was warmer. Hauled a load of pine logs in early January, dumped great but. . . return was dirt slow! With any hydralics, cold weather plays havic on them. The FEL on my tractor is the same way until its warmed up. I run a hydralic crane and its a real problem in cold weather! to put it nicely. This slowness might just be a lesson in patience for you for some reason. As long as it keeps coming down your all set. Just remember when you move forward your height is alot different.

Mine is a Moritz and maybe they are one of a few that install an adjustable return valve. I know if the valve is too far out the bed will come down too fast. Haven't used it this winter yet but did last and don't remember it being a problem. I need to go out and put a battery in and try it.
