Dump Trailer

   / Dump Trailer #141
Hello I new here but I have been reading a lot of the posts I have been reading this post with a lot of intrest. I will be reworking my curent manual lift dump cart to a hydraulic dump after I rebuild my 60" snowblower. I want to say what a nice job you are doing on your dump cart and would like to add that in the picture of it hooked up to your tow vehical I see a ball hicth on your tractor and would like to sugjest you use that as the coupleing point as that thin piece of flat bar will bend if the trailer has any kind of weight in it when you dump it. either a coupler or put a heavier piece of flat bar on it. great job so far can't wait to see the end product. Ken.

well here is where I am so far. I weled all the joints and finally attached the tow bar to it. I have the ring coming for the pintel hitch I have to connect to the front of the tow bar.

Keep those progress pix coming. Looks stout with those gussets.

I wonder why you wouldn't want to have those load bearing assemblies out closer to the axle bearings/wheels where the load would be more direct instead of cantilevered? This is not to say your structure isn't adequate, I was just wonderin'.

the bed frame for the trailor is that width and after that the side of the dump go upwards in a curve. so that is the widest I could go with the angle iron frame.

Iplayfarmer, have you seen this site? I'm thinking of getting one of the small trailers for behind the ATV. They have some bigger trailers for tractors at the bottom of the page.

Horse Stalls.com ATV Equipment and Accessories, Wagons Trailers Harrows

I hadn't seen that site before your post, but I had seen most of these wagons and trailers on similar sites before I started. I took some of my ideas from them, actually.

The one I hadn't seen was the manure spreader. I'm thinking about adding that option to my dump cart as an attachment in place of the tailgate. Thanks for the post. I'll have to study that concept a little more and maybe borrow more ideas from these guys.

Well I am getting to the next phase of the project. I figured I post a few pics to get comments/ suggestions. I have the hinge mechanism C clamped to the frame of the trailor. I was trying to figure out just how much of a dumping angle I need and at the same time have the trailor balanced just so there is enough of weight to keep it level that way when it comes time to dump it won't take a lot of effort from the back hoe to lift the front part of the trailor.

If you look carefully when viewing the underside of the trailor compartment I have the angle iron/ bed frame flush with one end and back a few inches on the other end I was wondering which end should land on the ground when dumping. The reason for this is once it tips and starts to fall out I will have to drag the end along the ground/ road and I wsa wondering which end would it be better to do this with.

The hitch I have is a pintel hitch and I use one like this on my trailor which I carry the tractor on. I find it good and secure, the road into the cabin is uneven woods road and a regular hitch would take a beating in that situation.
Someone suggested that type of hitch for pulling the trailor for the tractor and I am glad I listened to him. He told that is what the army uses nad once you are on the highway moving along you don't notice the difference, only when going slow on uneven ground.

I need the height on the trailor so I can get a good dump angle. the only way to lower the trailor height is to bring hydraulics into the situation and I didn't want to do that.

One of my next things to do is to start figuring out how Iam going to mount the orange part of the hitch to the boom on the BH.

Iplayfarmer,
Is there any more progress? Is it just me or did we change trailer here?

fidler kelly, I have had a fair amount of seat time in a 10 wheel dump truck. I drove one of the two we used on my place for a couple weeks during excavation of my site. One thing that surprised me was the extreme angle needed to dump material with much moisture content.

A little dirt would fall out the back as you elevate the bed but if it was moist then you had to raise the bed all the way to nearly vertical to get the material to dump. Even then often a considerable amount would not fall out till you drove a few feet forward (bouncing on the uneven ground.)

I'm suggesting that you allow for a near vertical dump position capability. Those times when it is needed you will be glad to have it as it prevents your having to do too much off loading with a shovel.

Phil

I haven't made much progress lately. Between family reunions, Kids' soccer practice, and vacations, I can hardly find time to mow the lawn, let alone fabricate a new implement. In my head as I was designing this trailer it was going to be a project for a few weekends and I'd have it to use through the whole summer. I just looked and the first post that I made to this thread was almost eleven months ago.

Thanks for the interest. It makes me feel good to know that I'm not the only one out there wondering when I'll ever get to put in more time and make some more progress.

I am glad that fiddler kelly is posting to this think, though, to keep it alive while I get through the rat race of summer. I expect to make some progress next weekend since my family is going to visit my in-laws and I will have a little free time.

A bit more progress today on the trailor. I cut the back out of what will be the dump and got the hole for the hitch drilled through the tounge so now I can put the pin in to hole the insert for the hitch in place.I have two pieces of angle iron weld together ,they will support the front end of the dump when in the horizontal position.

Patrick_g I moved the dump more to the center so the center of the dump is on top of the axle. I then weled it ,should have checked my angle before I welded it espically after what you had said. My angle is less nw and I may have to reconsider the position of the dump and move it further ahead so the dump is more upright when in the dump position.

I also cut the side of the trailor today to reduce undeeded metal but as I cut one side it sprang open so I had to weld it back together.

There is a famous Dutch beer commercial, their slogan is " Time isnt something you HAVE, time is something you MAKE" :D

Well, at least your dump bed is small enough that having to use a shovel to get it emptied is not quite the Herculean task that the 10 wheeler can be. Of course you might not dump sticky stuff but that isn't a safe bet.

I agree 100%. It's the one thing in life where all men really are created equal. We all have exactly the same amount of time in a day.

I've been MAKING time lately to spend with family, etc. I'll make time here in a week or so to get back to the dump trailer.

Yeah Iplayfarmer I agree with you , you have to be a loner to have time to get projects done within a reasonable time limit. I hope to get my project soon finished I have a hunting season around the corner and then this project comes to a hault if not completed.
I look froward to having this project completed so i can stat using it up to the cottage for back filling the rocky ground that is there.

For you it's hunting season. For me it's summer growing season. Although your project seems to be coming right along nicely.

My problem is that I think about the things that I want to build/modify in the season that I'll be using them. That means that I'm working on my mower/tiller/dump trailer in the summer when I should be using them and working on my scraper/snowblower in the winter when I should be using them. If I was smart I'd spend the winter fixing up the things I want to use in the summer.

Hooray! I finally got back out in the garage to make some more progress. I welded some eyes onto the tongue into which I'm going to attach the lever to actuate the dump pump.

Then, I took the whole Thamn Ding back apart again to touch up weld and improve the bracketing and bracing to give it structural support. Just to keep it interesting I've included a random picture of the parts and pieces laying helter skelter accross the garage floor.

I've gone around the welds on the lower ram brace. Now I'll add some more metal under it and around it. I'll do the same thing with the top ram brace and then add a bunch of angle pieces throughout as needed.

It sure seems like I should have more to post for the amount of time that I took doing it.

I cut 4" wide pieces of diamond plate to back the two ram brackets. Then I cut 2" triangles from the same diamond plate to use as darts to brace the brackets. I'm pretty sure the brackets aren't going anywhere.

I also use some more peices of the ATV racks as cross braces to stiffen up the dump bed.

I posted a few pictures below. Feel free to laugh at my welds. I'm still learning, and welding this thin stuff that those ATV racks are made out of is pretty tricky with my old stick welder.

I probably won't get back out to work on it again until this weekend. This will have to do for a few days.
