East Coast: Hurricane Florence

Well, got some pics from one of my wife's co workers who has a place in Wilmington. House is pretty much gone due to water. Here, schools are closed are closed, and everyone is watching the Yadking river as it's supposed to crest today around noon time. As noted, for the most part, we're lucky as we're on higher ground in our rural area. Been raining non stop since Friday late afternoon and hasn't stopped yet. Thankfully no wind damage as of yet.

Those power line guys are tough!! I wouldn't want to do that kind of work in good weather, let alone the crap that they have to work in.

My FIL was a lineman in Vermont for over 25 years. He can tell you some real good stories, and up there it wasn't the water, but the snow. He's in his 70's now, and I still consider him pretty tough LOL

Yup. We get Power outages regularly up in cottage country, and the Hydro One guys are on the scene in no time. They have amazing equipment, and the guys themselves are real life savers! Still pisses me off how much we have to pay for power, though. At least they are spending it least some of the money on proper equipment.

Funny. When I talk to HVAC equipment manufacturers, they all tell me what a big heat pump market Canada is because the electricity is so cheap...

Anyone see that Weather Channel Reporter "BRACING" himself against the ferocious storm, all dressed up, as people casually stroll by in he background wearing shorts. Make you not know what to believe any more. Just more Fake News!

My part of SC was lucky with Flo as we usually are with Atlantic hurricanes. We got a fair amount of rain. The ones coming up from the Gulf of Mexico seem to bring us more moisture. I always look south west to see what's coming, even if it's snow.

//With the wind, watching the local news is problematic because the digital signal is constantly dropping. Not even worth watching. Any who, I heard or read, that 20,000 utility workers were in NC!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

My impression is that after the hurricanes started hitting the states again 30ish years ago, the power companies and government has gotten better at responding. The vast majority of people now get out when needed. People are not staying around if it will be really dangerous, and if it is safe to stay, people were prepping for Flo a week before it hit.
Utilities have made mutual aid agreements. Here痴 one: Home

My understanding was that the east coast from Georgia up to Quebec and the Maritimes have an agreement. We致e seen crews from Maryland to Quebec in different storms.

NH utilities have 200 linemen, Massachusetts has 1,000. When the big snowstorm hit NH Thanksgiving 2014 11/26 (6 forecast, 12? of heavy wet snow fell) it was the 4th largest power outage in state history, but they were nearly all back up by Nov 30. Contrast that with the Dec 2008 ice storm when many people were out for weeks. We had friends who were pulling a sled back and forth from a nearby lake for water.

Wow, that is a surprise. Up here in Ontario the Government was overturned in the last election (June of this year), due in no small part to electricity prices.
