East Coast: Hurricane Florence

Why? You want to pop in for tea?

You are talking about a specific geographic area. Just wondering if you live there? Guessing not?

We got lucky that Florence weakened and went south but it is going to be a major disaster due to flooding.

Fran was a major wind disaster into the center of the state. Floyd was a 500 year flood event in eastern NC.

Florence was going to be a combination of Fran and Floyd but it's wind speed weakened. Thank goodness. However, it is moving SLOWLY and there is major flooding going on now and will continue into last next week.

Rivers are forecast to be 2 to 3 times OVER flood stage. Meaning with a flood stage of 20 feet, the crest is going to be 40-60 feet.

Floyd was forecast to have 15ish inches of rain but it dropped over 20 inches. One area of NC already has 40 inches of rain. Many areas are expecting 20-30 inches. One of the river gauges I checked has already broken a record for water flow and Flo will be raining for a few more days AND raining upstream.

I95 and I40 is now closed and given the rain that has fallen, and more on the way, who knows when it will reopen.

The recommended route takes travelers west on Interstate 64 in Virginia to I-81 South, to I-75 south in Tennessee to I-16 East in Georgia back to I-95.The recommended route takes travelers west on Interstate 64 in Virginia to I-81 South, to I-75 south in Tennessee to I-16 East in Georgia back to I-95.

Thanks for the update Dan!!

Ironically, we have four local Disaster Relief small companies here in within 20 miles of me. They are all doing last minute upgrades to their equipment. Good friend of mine owns one with 3 trucks. They will leave here on Wednesday, headed your way.

Not for nothing, it's the most powerful force on earth.

Hoping everybody can stay dry, or, at a minimum, safe.

Ain’t that the truth! There were several staging areas in Greensboro and Winston-Salem Friday and yesterday with groups from all over the eastern US awaiting to head that way.

Crews come in from a long way................. back in '98, we had crews up here from Georgia working to clear the big eastern Ice Storm damage. Seeing it live, it looks like an army arriving, but all hands are needed at times like these.

I DOES. It really does lift one's spirits when you see those trucks. I saw a convoy of them moving in early last week and I was very thankful.

We were VERY, VERY, VERY lucky with Flo. We were just out of, or barely in, the tropical storm force winds. I figured we would loose power Thursday or Friday. Friday evening it was looking like we might not loose power because the winds were not getting any worse. At 12:30ish Saturday morning we lost power. :( Dang it. Got up around 6:30 and decided to go into town but the road was blocked by a tree that had fallen on the power lines. :( Turned around and figured out who to call to tell that the only road into our subdivision was blocked by a downed tree in the power lines. I think the road blockage got us priority to clear the tree and restore power. We were only out for 10-12 hours. THANKFULL we are.

Went out to Lowes for some stuff, and there was 20 or so tree trucks staged in the parking lot. A band of heavy rain was going through and they were eating lunch. Very glad to see them. Very.

With the wind, watching the local news is problematic because the digital signal is constantly dropping. Not even worth watching. Any who, I heard or read, that 20,000 utility workers were in NC!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

My impression is that after the hurricanes started hitting the states again 30ish years ago, the power companies and government has gotten better at responding. The vast majority of people now get out when needed. People are not staying around if it will be really dangerous, and if it is safe to stay, people were prepping for Flo a week before it hit.

The big flooding is going to be east and south of us. Those areas are table top flat and the water has no where to go but up. There are mandatory evacuation orders for people within a mile of the Cape Fear river. That river runs through Fayettville, NC so the city is having to evacuate.

Those power line guys are tough!! I wouldn't want to do that kind of work in good weather, let alone the crap that they have to work in.

They're obviously doing a great job down there. A couple of days ago the news said there was more than 1,000,000 without power. Yesterday that number was down to 650,000. Yeah, I know that repairing one major line can reconnect thousands of people, but still...

Was getting a cup of coffee the other morning at the gas station. There was a guy in a pickup owned by one of the utility contractors fueling up (himself and the truck!). Talked to him for a few minutes He said that they'd sent 6 crews down to the area a couple of days earlier to stage outside the zone until things passed.

Be safe down there!!
