Before we put the drums back on, we put a chain around each brake shoe, and bled the brakes. This way we would know if the wheel cylinders were leaking, and take care of it first. They bled good. So we will have brakes now, woohoo! :drink: but first we killed three hours trying to figure out why we did not have anything happening up front, we were not getting air to the front power cluster. Last time we worked on the air component of the brakes, we had an air brake mechanic (mutual friend) helping us. He told us to tie the relay back in, me and my mechanic friend that usually helps me had bypassed it. Well the last thing we checked this time was the air, so it took three hours and five minutes to get something happening up front. Doh!! I think we would have got the brakes adjusted and the wheels back on otherwise, we will have to do it later now. It will not be long before the snow keeps me from working on it for a few months, I at least want to get the wheels back on and move it away from the standing dead trees before that happens.

The air over hydraulic brakes can quite often be a royal pain, I have looked at how much it would be and if it would be possible to put straight air brakes on with the safety spring cans. I have had the engine quite going down hill and the air went away real fast and a dynahoe with a dead engine and loosing brakes is an unpleasant situation, but haven't found someone with any good ideas.

Someone told me a family member of his converted to straight air, but it was too long ago for him to offer any help. I have a spare backing plate, shoe width, and drum diameter. That should be enough to find something. I probably will not try unless I have more problems.

Which of your machines is air over hydraulic?

It's a Dynahoe 190-4, powered by a 4-53 Detroit, 20,000# loader backhoe.
A digging and pushing beast when shes up to snuff.
I need to work on the steering, not sure if the steering pump is bad or if it got some debris in some of the proportioning valves.
She took a hard lick on the hoe last year and blew a couple of lines and I have been finding hard rubber particles in various places.
When she dead sticked on me the hoe was the emergency brake..

I had a 24000# Dynalift D4P80 Zoom Boom type machine. I lost the engine coming down a rather steep hill, and thought I had brakes. The first depression worked and none after that. No power steering, but some arm strong. I ran over something, but no real damage. A memorable experience I don't wish on anybody. I think I figured, repairing the parking brake was in order after that.

Helpful story. I had a similar experience when I first got this machine, but not so steep. I dumped the bucket to stop it. I am also working on getting the hand brake working (drum on the driveshaft), the only thing keeping that from happening now is the leak on the steering control valve directly above it. The leak is the valve itself, and already has new o rings in it. It is available, but at a price I can only categorize as ridiculous. I do not know if it was used on other stuff. As long as I am buying it as a Terex part it will be ridiculous. The wheel cylinders had a manufacturer name and part number on them, I could get them at a reasonable price that way. I do not remember a manufacturer name on the control valve.

The wheel cylinders were also used on International trucks, so they are still readily available.

Thanks for the comment. I was hoping by posting this I would get help from people with direct experience with this machine. There does not seem to be much direct experience out there, but it is still a good exchange of information.

Yeah, I've no direct experience either, so I can only offer moral support :drink: Very glad to see you giving that "old iron" another life
