what kind of trailer is it?


an empty weight on a trailer of 5K? what is it a 20K lb trailer?

i consider most 20' "equipment" trailers (6" C frame on 8 bolt wheels) to be in the 2500lb empty range. but TWICE that?

Our Down to Earth 16' Landscape trailer weighed 1980 lbs before enclosing. Now weighs just under 2400. And that is only for a 7000 lb rated trailer on 5 bolt wheels.

I left the scales at 24,670#, I did not get a tare weight coming in.
The 4'x 20'x 1/4" thick sheets of plate steel weighed 1,650# each (was hauling 7). Trying to figure the empty weight of my tralier.

something doesnt add up.

every "steel" weight i can come up with is between 10-11 lbs per sqft for 1/4" material. (or 490lbs/cuft or 7850kg/m^3)

so 80sqft of 1/4" material = ~820lbs

but the stated weight of 1650 each is ~twice that weight. So its either twice the density of "steel" or its 1/2" plate

(FYI twice the density of steel 15700kg/m3, Molybdenum 10188kg/m3, Lead 11340kg/m3 Uranium 18900kg/m3)

so if you were to ask me "whats it weigh" I would have said

truck 8K
trailer 3K
steel 6K
for a grand total of 17K lbs.

so how did we get to a "scale weight" of 25K lbs? in the above description were do you possibly add 8Klbs reasonably?

something doesnt add up. So what do you think it is?

1) truck weight is wrong
2) trailer weight is wrong
3) my steel calc weight is wrong (despite checking 4 different times with 4 different websites)
4) "scale" weight is wrong.

DANG, I am really sorry folks I just seen my typo.. ITS 8'Wide x 20'Long x 1/4" thick..
dont know how I typed 4' my blonde wifes peroxide is jumping on me while I sleep

Looks like I will finally have few days off work I will go by the scales at a local dump and report the weight..

Just left my local gravel pit after having my newest truck weighed. With me in it (165#) and 3/4 tank of fuel my new King Cab Nissan Titan 4x4 weighted 5,840#. The max GCVWR is 14,850# leaving 9,010# for towing. The book list the max at 9,200# but I carry a tool box, 3 different hitches, and have all the options like leather seats, navigation, sat radio, ect.

Just to clarify things, I found scale at a local land fill, 1/4 tank of fuel, few tools in toolbox, both 5th wheel and GN hitch in place along with me in it, scaled at 8,160#

I believe much of the confusion may have been caused by my typo on the dimensions of the sheets of plate steel..

Glad to hear you got it weighed. I thought the truck was about 7,500# so I was not too far off. You, the hitches, and tools probably made up the other 600 or so pounds.

Now you know what it weighs. Do not forget to right it down. I right my weights on a sticker and put it on the backside of the glove box door.

You where right on the money. I have a few chains, binders, jeep parts in tool box of the trailer so that being said.

Steel = 11,550
Truck = 8,160
Trailer = 4,960

Gross = 24,670
