A distant friend has approached me to do an engine change on his 99 Ford f350, 4x4,Triton V8.The new motor would be a Jasper longblock.
What is the going rate for a job like this and being that I know him what would be a fair price(he's paying for the engine)?
I was thinking about $1000 plus fluids, gaskets and incidentals.
Am I in the ball park or what?
Thanks in advance,I know this isn't tractor related but, the" related topics "forum will not allow me to post??.....Mike

"Distant" friends fall in the category of my normal "Time and Materials" charge to everyone else. I would assume the "friend" is coming to you for your expertise, and not that you will be cheaper than an "expert". Just my opinion. I assume you are the expert.

Monday, if I can remember, I'll try to swing by a shop I used to work at and book the time. A grand sounds like a good ballpark figure. The incidentals might eat him alive. Why does he need a new engine?

He ran it out of oil,he went 10k+ since his last change, now he's got a rod that sounds like it wants to get out of that engine real bad......Mike

Have fun! If this guy takes so little care of his equipment you stand a good chance of having serious warranty problems with him. At least you shouldn't have to worry about oil soaked O2 sensors and oil plugged catylitic converters. Unless he was burning 2 quarts every 100 miles and that's why he didn't change the oil. How many miles on the truck?

I just replaced a 460 in a 93 ford 350. I can tell you that I wouldn''t do that again for anyone but myself. I never saw so many vacumn and special guards and such, what a mess. It is fine and runs great and I'm glad I didn't have the expense of having someone else do it. I sure appreciate some of my older rigs though, easy to work on.

I know the feeling.worst one I ever did was a Chev AWD Astro van only to have the factory rebuilt engine go bad after a month,Oh they gave me another engine but, had to eat my labor. My knuckles were raw for a week on that one.
Even front drive swaps aren't as bad as that van was and probably vans in general..........Thanks,Mike

I can't tell you what to charge, but I can tell you that the guys over at IATN (international auto technicians network) say the easiest way to do the job is to remove the cab.

Yes, you read correctly. I don't work on them so wasn't paying total attention, but I seem to remember 24 hours being mentioned.

Sorry I didn't get around to getting the info yesterday. According to Alldata the job pays 19.5 hours to install a long block. Short block is 22.5.

We have not had to change out a Triton engine as of yet. I doubt seriously if many people could switch this motor out in 19.5 hours. You will probably spend at least 8 hours changing parts over once the engine is out. I believe a rebuilt engine with heads is over $3000 (not list). I hope you have a good back as you will be laying over the front for a while. The last 4 cylinders are under the cowl of the cab. Any time you work on a 4WD, that takes longer. $1000/40 hours=$25 hour..

I know I wouldn't have been able to do it in that time. I would have spent the first four hours cussin' and kicking stuff around the shop just because I got stuck doin' it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
