I’ll have to take a closer look at the freeze plug. I had in my mind I had to use the back plug and there is no way I could put the heater in the 7 O’clock position on that one. The wife had no trouble starting it today in 25-degree weather. I just would rather start the engine with it warm. Seems to me it would be easier on it. The 685 won’t even smoke at 10 degrees if you warm it up, but that takes a good 4 hours. Smokes a little if you only plug it up for 2 hours. Can’t hardly see in the shop if you fire it up with either. Thanks for all the replies. This board has been so helpful to me.

The block heater doesn't have to be put in at the 7 o'clock position. The instructions tell you how to place it based on the engine you have and the freeze plug location. When you get the freeze plug out there may be internal block castings blocking that position. The main thing to keep in mind is not to touch the internal block castings with the metal heating coil on the block heater. This could rub a hole in the heater coil from the rough casting. I had room in mine to go from 5 o'clock to 7 o'clock.

I have a '04 TC33DA with the engine block heater installed. The dealer forgot to do the install at purchase; we had talked about it but did not include it in the final pricing. He sent out a tech who installed it outside in less than 40 minutes with the loader on. He did not remove the starter and it seemed to go very smoothly. He had a little incentive to move quickly since it was about 40 deg f and the engine was hot. I had been working on the drive.
It is installed in the front freeze plug in about the 5:30-6:00 position. He punched out the freeze plug with a long screw driver as described by others then pulled it out with needle nose pliers.
If not for the above mix-up I would have done it myself. It makes a big difference in starting but needs to be plugged in for two or more hours. Using it will actually move the temp needle to just below the green temp area if plugged in a little longer.
