Hi js5020
The idea you had with cutting both ends off the gear boring and broching to fit the motor shalf would work. Thats the same method Gravely uses on the late models. The only problem pto speed.
By the way the 18 hp Briggs you have, what size shalf does it have.
Put that baby on. I thank you would like it!!!! Thanks gravelymay

Well I kinda gave puttin that engine on some thought but,,,,,, it's an L head twin it looked like it was gonna be real loooong out the back so I kinda started looking for a single cyl. The shaft on the Briggs? It's a 1" which would make it easy to put on a later tractor. The only place I need more power ( notice I said need not want ) would be blowing snow, that darn little dog eater sure seems to need the hp, the 12 Kohler just plays with everything else.

Hi js5020

We been trying out that 13 Honda Gravely with the 30" deck on big grass
slipped clutch but no choke down.
One thing I did notice how well the front stayed down like the old gravelys did. If that big 12 goes down this is some to thank about? Thanks Bruce

The 12 hp machine would be easy to repower, everything to swap in a Briggs with a 1" shaft is available off the shelf, so I could go up to 23hp. Probably handle better with the Briggs, I don't think they weigh as much as the Kohler, but I have a cheap weight set up on the 30" mower to keep the nose down. I know I'm gonna need to do something with the Kohler soon, it's starting to consume a fair bit of oil, not a bug duster yet but gettin close.

Hi
Thats what got me into repower, My old 19 Series II got to where If I mowed all day, I had better check the oil at lunch time, because It would be down about a pint in half day. Bruce

Well I am back on this project, got everything disassembled and have some new color on the housings, changed the color was black it's now red ( sorry correct police ) I started getting info on the L twin and compared it to the v twin,,,, the L twin is only 2 inches longer so it's back on the list of possibilities, I still haven't decided on the gearing I want to use. But were moving forward!

Hi Js5020
I though I had ran everyone off.How do you plan to connect to the old gear?
Every thing you look at makes a little long? I had though about a cluster gear below the engine gear to reduce the speed? that is a small gear on motor mated to a larger gear on cluster, the small gear on the cluster would mate with the larger gear on the input shaft to the old gravely. O well just
thinking Good to hear some body is alive. thanks Bruce

How do I plan to connect the gear? Well I've been giving that some thought and came up with several ideas,,, because just about any engine above 8 hp is going to have a 1" crank I have scrapped the thought of boring and broaching the gear because I'm certain it would not hold up with a 1" hole in it, I figured 3/4" might have a chance, so I'm thinkin I cut off the taper and cut a keyway in it and make a sleeve to join the gear and the crank. Course I need to do some measuring of what the overall length will be .

JS5020 Hi! For Gravely L model . You need two adaptors one for sun gear one for engine to tranny. Mr. Bruce Livingstone make it I add pics. I Fix a Dek-diesel on L model with gear reduction. I am very happy now 78 hrs on it. I have too a L8 model I dont use now. Why My Gravely L8 at full speed on heavy load take 2-3 liter gas hour my Dek -diesel less ONE liter. The economy is fabulous 72 hrs for 45 liters Fuel is more one dollars a liter here. Plenty torque at low and medium speed. Direct injection diesel are VERY NOISY. I plan make a new thread with many pics for show How fix new engine on Gravely L model. Good Luck ! Oldmech

Hi js5020
I thank that will work ? If you put a woodruff Key on the in put shalf then
put your sleeve over it and the motor shaft. with a bolt down thur the shalf to hold it all together a 3/8 X 24 cap screw is what I used on the Honda.
IT MIGHT JEST WORK!!!!!!!!! Thanks Bruce

Hi oldmech
You found in Pic what I was trying to say in words.
belso site is a good thing to look at. His yanmar conversion is what was I thanking about . It looks very good I even liked His pipe adapter. You can make any length you need to make it up to any length of shalf. Thank Bruce

Yep that's where I came up with the sleeve idea, basically got the idea from that Yanmar conversion, but instead of remaking the gear I'm gonna use the original. I'm gonna cut the taper off of the old input shaft, cut a keyway in the remaining stub. Both the new engine crankshaft and the original "stub" will be 1"dia od, I will then make a sleeve 1" id and broach a keyway into it and join the crank and the "stub".

Hi js5020
Well I found out something today, if I understand it right.I understand That
the later motel Gear cluster will fit in the old Gravely. If so we get a New
set of gears. Then use Gravely's new Gear that is bored to 1.00" Like the one I used on the 13 hp Honda. This way it would be No different then the Honda conversion.
Thanks Bruce

Dek-Diesel Gravely report. My Dek-diesel Gravely is over 100hrs now. I use only 80 liter of diesel fuel. This engine start and run very well. At first I note some overspeed and racing. Later I read on the web some Dek-Diesel engines on electric generator fail. Balancer shaft broken (May be weakness) Generator need 3600rpm for give 60cycles electricity. 3600-4000rpm are very fast for a Diesel. So I adjust governor(Easy) for 3000rpm .NEVER OPERATE A DIESEL ENGINE WITHOUT THE GOVERNOR. This one control the fuel pump. At 2000-2500-3000 Rpm you have a Better torque and a better fuel economy. Just four small bolts come loose and I note some (Little bit) oil loss by crankshaft oil seals. This engine(Industrial) never overheat. VIBRATION are High to medium. As all direct injection diesel very NOISY. I think LV100 YANMAR are VERY GOOD engines. Dek-Diesel are GOOD engine and for the price a DEAL This is my epinion. I would like find a small diesel engine make Here in America. WHY NOT. Thank! Oldmech

Hi Oldmech
That would be nice if some body did make a afordable Diesel
I was talking to Bruce L and He said The peak torque on the 13 hp Honda is about 2700 rpm.
That is how they do get by with out gearing down.
By the way have you ever been on The gravelyclubgroups@yahoo.com.
They do a lot talking gravely.

Hi Bruce! I look info. for the Gx 390 Honda. This Gas engine is the best you can find. VERY POWERFUL and Very good fuel Economy as 230 Grams per H.P. hour . Or 3.7 L at Max HP hour. For torque the best is 2500 RPM . You cannot use a Honda engine below 2000 rpm. Torque drop a lot at 3600 rpm. I join a Curve Chart. Note It is a NET Torque and NET Hp Not the Max (not true) as usual. Me I like the new L100v Yanmar Diesel (I dont Have now). Fuel economy is VERY LOW as 165 Grams per HP hour . Thanks for the website. Good luck ! Oldmech

Hi oldmech
Sorry I have't been on this Thread for Quit a while.
I have been on the gravely cub most of the time.
Well the 13 hp Honda does a very good job .
I have now put 3 other 24 Hp Hondas on the 4 wheel gravelys.
I have still been thanking on the L models.
I got a set of double gears off e- bay from a 5000 series tractor.
That I can reduce the speed.
I e-mailed Bruce from New Z. he says all you have to do is slow the engine down to 2700 rpm and that is close to what the Old gravely engines ran?
with the 13 Hp you still have torque to do a good job.
thanks Bruce g
