engine ran backwards "I think"

Re: engine ran backwards \"I think\"

Well, I guess I need to study up on the precombustion chamber and other inderect injection methods. The point that I was trying, and failed, to get across was fuel must be injected (or otherwise) into the cylinder, not the intake as is done in fuel injected and carbed gas motors. I didn't say carbed diesel, I added carbed to include gas motors into the discusion.

But comparing a Gasoline engine that has its fuel sucked in on the intake stroke , Verses a Diesel that has its fuel injected at the top of the compression stroke , If its Direct injected or indirect injected on a diesel engine its going to the cylinder and at TDC of compression stroke , Diesel's recive no fuel oil through the intake ..

Re: engine ran backwards \"I think\"

If you are a race fan you've seen this. A car will spin out and the rear wheels will reverse their travel of direction. If the driver does not depress the clutch pedal, lock the brakes, or get the transmission into neutral the engine will turn backwards at high rpm. When this happens the oil pump cannot lube the engine. The car will run for a while, but almost always fails when this happens. No more rpm,s than a tractor is capable of damage should not occur.

Re: engine ran backwards \"I think\"

Any engine that has a "runaway fuel situation" (meaning more than the engine can deal with) can TRY and run backwards if all the stars are in the right place above.

I say TRY because that is what the engine wants to do. Will it actually run and run normal, nope. Can it cause damage, usually only if you leave it go to the house, wait on hold for the mechanic to come to the phone, and then go back only to find all kinds of fluids everywhere, caused by a motor trying to run "out of time" and compression going the wrong way.

USUALLY, if you are present, and realize that something is amiss, which is human nature for most, and turn the key off, there is no damage to be found. If it were to have damage, the problem would be immediately present.

Just as a note, on engines that do it this ugly cursing and talking back when the motor gets turned off, the opposite is required, turning the key to "on".

As they say here in Florida: If it ain't broke don't fix it!

If it continues this bad habit, then the unit should be looked at.

But with a Diesel their really isnt a "out of time" Whene running backwards Only diffrence between running the right direction and kicked backwards and running is the exhaust becomes the intake and the intake becomes the exhaust on 4 stroke Diesel's ... I have heard that Gasoline engines would run backwards . Aint no way their going to run backwards for more than 1 sec or so , Now im not talking about the 2strokes in golf carts that will run backwards im meaning 4 strokes . Unless you stick a carburator on the exhaust it cant get fuel.. Unlike a Diesel you have 4 strokes Intake --nothing but air.Compression --TDC of compression or a hair b4 is whene i diesel see's its fuel then comes power then exhaust ..... So a diesel will sit their and run backwards till either you shut it down or locks from lack of oil....... Gasoline 4 strokes get their fuel on their intake stroke .
