EPA issue ban on wood stoves

At the end of the day, it is all about punishing the law abiding citizens that do things right to try and rein in the ones that don't. We used to burn wood and always burned hot enough to minimize the smoke and always burned dry, seasoned wood. The problem comes from so many folks burning trash, wood that is not dry and damping the stoves down, causing excess smoke and stink. We have a couple of neighbors that think burning their trash in the wood stove is not hurting anything, but it sure makes for obnoxious smell...

We switched to pellets and then to propane....

True... many are woefully ignorant when it comes to wood.

Still remember when my parents sent down the road to the new neighbors... they were having trouble with the fireplace.

First, the damper was closed... they did not know about dampers.

Second, the wood they were using was steaming... it was from an apple tree they cut down the day before.

My point is why are we all painted with the same brush?

I have an EPA certified wood stove with cat and plenty of seasoned and split oak from storm damage... which, I am required to clean up even on acerage.

Love the smell of birch being burned in a fireplace/stove.

Yep...sure lights off fast and burns quite well....doesn't last too long though.

Disregard.... I thought you guys were inferring that the EPA was setting regs for home sales. I misread. It was in response to local regs....not EPA nonsense...

I owned a pellet/corn stove. Bought right at the time the corn price went nuts.. and that was after decades of stability... Just to compare pellet/corn stoves to others: The big difference is that these stoves have a huge fuel store/hopper so their operation is not "cyclic" like a wood stove or a furnace. They produce a steady heat output and that output can be modulated over about a 2-3x range so possibly 4000btu/hr on low up to 12000btu/hr on high. If they are connected to a thermostat they will run on the lowest setting until the thermostat calls for heat when they will ramp up the burn rate all the way to high, if needed and then drop down to low when the target has been met. The fact that they put out heat continuously without interruption means that you need less BTU of output to meet your heating needs compared to a 50 000btu furnace that cycles on for 15 min every hour.

Pellet stoves are listed on the 'Certified Woodstoves' list on the EPA site. Unfortunately it is PDF and not an easily sortable format but if you look through there quite a few of the pellet stoves will not make the 1.5 gram/hour threshold. Those that do tend to be low BTU output stoves. Which begs the question of how the measurements are calculated. I am assuming it is a straight measurement which means the easiest way to meet it is to make the stove smaller and burn less wood/pellets. So instead of installing 1 wood stove to heat your house you install 2 or 3.... you pollute just as much but it's OK because they are certified ;)

Speaking as a firewood processor, we cut a lot of wood each year. The number of "little guys" selling firewood in NYS is outragous! The EPA, and our Government are not really concerned about our Planet /per say. There concerned about the "green back dollar" There is just an endless amount of un-collected tax money that they are loosing out on. Can't really make me believe any different. We deliver to a lot of extremely poor people where wood is there source of heat, its not cheap like lots of people think, but its cheaper the the alternitives out there, It gives us a little bit of the feeling of "independence" in this rat race world.
As for me and my house, I am a God loving, hard working man, struggling to stay a head of the bill collector. My wife is in the severe stage of Alzheimer's and i heat our house with wood and i proud to say it! I will make this statement and stand on it, " It will be a cold day in July when some "tree hugging" EPA desk monkey comes to my house and serves me a summons to shut my furnace down! This person will not walk or drive away from my property. I will not stand for this and im sure there are a number of yall out there that feel the same as i do. All i can say is get the guns ready boys, might be an up rising!

We like our new stove so much maybe we should buy another before the standards kick in and store it away. I'm not getting any younger so this one may out last me. It meets the old standards with only 2.56 g/h. When it's burning correctly about all we see is heat vapor out the flue. Our old 30 some year old Buck Insert had a lot cracks and eat wood.

Good to see someone else here stand on good basic principle rather than turn and run on fear.
Unfortunately, unlike gun rights, wood burners have no political voice like the NRA.
