Equipment trailer, 16' vs 18' dilemma

*Whats the point in a deckover that narrow?

Reasons to go with a deck over:
So you can haul things like this without the wheels and fenders being in the way.

So you can load and unload things from the side with a set of forks without the wheels and fenders being in the road.

*To allow getting the trailer into and or through narrower places.

To haul something that the owner doesn't need a jumbo jet to move.

I think you guys missed my question. I perfectly understand the benefits of a deckover, I bought one this year. My point was one of the very reasons for a deckover is to take advantage of a wider deck among the others.

I know what you mean about wondering how you got along with out something, after you get some new tool/equipment.

Is that an 18' in your picture? the machine is full forward, seems like there would be much tongue weight, but the truck's not sagging at all.

Looks good,
JB.

Is a 16' with a home brew HYD winch "5 1/2 HP honda" . Use equlizer hitch and sway control. also has brakes on all 4 wheels. I set front wheels back to first cross member on trailer seems to balance out better but whee of brush hog sticks out past back. Plus the Truck is a 1/2 ton with a rating of about 1700 LB payload Has been a tough little truck. Also have a Chev Silverado Crew Cab K2500 if it wont do job.

Update:

Found a decent deal on a 82" wide 20 footer, I'd be super happy and think it was the deal of the year cept it's just a 4 ton :(

I've been looking and looking, and couldn't find exactly what I wanted, which was an 18 foot 5 ton. didn't want to spend much since since it would only be used occasionally.

The tag on this trailer says it was built in 2006 by quality trailer from Salem, Ohio. GVWR says 9,000 lbs but it only has 4000 lb axles so they are figuring 1000 on the tongue. The limited capacity is a compromise but at least it gets me in the game and should be fine for my 4310 even with back hoe and other implements.
The 20 ft length is longer than I thought I wanted but the extra 2 ft will be a plus.

Towed it home 60 miles with my 3500 dual wheel utility body ram and it was very smooth no bouncing at all, the truck is big so the trailer did not seem overwhelming even on the first tow.

Paid $1,500. the guy threw in a few extras like the 2 tool boxes, 4 chain binders, 2-5/16" ball mounted on a solid HD insert, a little electric winch with mount. The trailer came with a factory spare tire and mount, the spring assisted ramps. the tires are original and appear to have almost no use on them.

For this price I don't think I'll ever lose much if I choose to sell or trade up, every other trailer I found in this price range looked like it belonged in a junk yard, just wish it was a 5 ton, it's got such a nice big open deck with flush side rails that it would be sweet for placing and picking pallets but with only around a 6500 lb payload capacity, that's only a few pallets before you'd be maxed out.

Oh well seems all in life is a compromise.

Sounds like a good deal. I am guessing the axles are actually 5,200# axles but the manufacture de-rated them due to the size of the structural steel made to use the trailer per the engineered drawings.

I have been it the trailer business for some time and have never seen 4K axles. Not saying they are not, may be custom made, but I bet you will find they are 5.2K. The give away is 6 lugs.

Either way it looks to be a nicely built trailer and a good price. Only suggestion I have is to get that winch its own battery in the tool box. It will burn up your trucks wiring if not upgraded.

Nice Find

That is a nice looking trailer and you will be glad for the extra 2ft.

I couldn't tell in the picture, but it looked like the axles had the bearing buddy's on them. Having them on saves a lot of time when you need to grease, and doesn't make a mess.

Would be nice if your right about the axles, the tag does say 4k but my 5 ton dumper with 5200# axles has the same wheels and tires. Actually the flat bed has 235/75 R15 and the dumps are 225/75 R15.

Have you any experience with Quality trailer company? I called them and they told me they use Lipper axles, are they any good?

The structural steel does seem lighter than other equipment trailers I've seen but the fit and finish construction looks pretty good. Thanks for the heads up regarding the winch, it's light duty but does work, has enough cable to reach well past the end of the trailer, so might come in handy for rolling a disabled vehicle up the ramps.

The guy had a 5 gallon pail of full of grade 70, goldish colored plated HD chain he used for securing his equipment, he wanted $100. but I declined to buy it, afterwards I was kicking my self, should of offered him something less. At least tried

Yes they do, and there was 2 packages of new ones in the box as well as other little goodies, one was a weld on grab hook for chain.
