Equipment trailer, 16' vs 18' dilemma

Dude you stole that trailer, sure it wasn't stolen??? Sorry about your brain fart on the chains. I just priced some today.....77.00 for 1 16' length with hooks on both ends. Depending on what was in there it might have been a deal at twice the price. As for the winch I wouldn't expect much there. Those light duty units are just what they are. Maybe on that trailer with the nice soft entry you'll get by.

Going to motor vehicle dept right now (sat morn) to register it, will find out if it's stolen :)

Regarding the chain I've got enough, but it's old and dirty and that new stuff sure was pretty, was at least 50 feet I'd guess probably could have gotten it for $50. the guy was in the dealing mood, but he's 60 miles away and I'm not going back for it.

Your in Ohio, do you recognize this trailer manufacturer, supposedly they are out of Salem.

No I do not but there are so many trailer mfg's out there. And then there are all the fab shops making them too. Man I'm even sick over you not getting those chains. heheheheloololl.

Update:

Found a decent deal on a 82" wide 20 footer, I'd be super happy and think it was the deal of the year cept it's just a 4 ton :(

I've been looking and looking, and couldn't find exactly what I wanted, which was an 18 foot 5 ton. didn't want to spend much since since it would only be used occasionally.

The tag on this trailer says it was built in 2006 by quality trailer from Salem, Ohio. GVWR says 9,000 lbs but it only has 4000 lb axles so they are figuring 1000 on the tongue. The limited capacity is a compromise but at least it gets me in the game and should be fine for my 4310 even with back hoe and other implements.
The 20 ft length is longer than I thought I wanted but the extra 2 ft will be a plus.

Towed it home 60 miles with my 3500 dual wheel utility body ram and it was very smooth no bouncing at all, the truck is big so the trailer did not seem overwhelming even on the first tow.

Paid $1,500. the guy threw in a few extras like the 2 tool boxes, 4 chain binders, 2-5/16" ball mounted on a solid HD insert, a little electric winch with mount. The trailer came with a factory spare tire and mount, the spring assisted ramps. the tires are original and appear to have almost no use on them.

For this price I don't think I'll ever lose much if I choose to sell or trade up, every other trailer I found in this price range looked like it belonged in a junk yard, just wish it was a 5 ton, it's got such a nice big open deck with flush side rails that it would be sweet for placing and picking pallets but with only around a 6500 lb payload capacity, that's only a few pallets before you'd be maxed out.

Oh well seems all in life is a compromise.

JB

That's one heck of a deal for a trailer like that in the northeast area. I agree with the others the axles look to be 5200# units. If you decide you're not happy with it or its not heavy enough contact me and I'll take it off your hands. Definitely a good buy.

Never heard of that brand of trailer but like you and I both noted the limit is the structural steel used. I still believe the axles are 5,200# units but I have been wrong before. Either way do not overload it on purpose. It was limited at that weight for a reason.

Good buy either way. Yea on the chain. You could go back and offer $75 bucks for it.

That winch with a snatch block will pull a full size truck up the trailer. Get a snatch block from HF for under $10 and you will be set. I put a 3,000# ATV winch from HF on my trailer and its plenty strong. I have pulled a full size truck up with no snatch block but I have one if needed.

I was really surprised at how much my 12K MM pulls down while pulling a vehicle up my deck over. Granted its a much steeper rise but I would have thought it would do it with ease. Makes me think anything less wouldn't be up to the task.

I have one of the HF 3K units on my trailer since 2004 and have pulled up at least 20 cars of all sizes. I really did not think it would last since it was only $50 but it has. I pulled up a 1996 Dodge 1500 4x4 with a 360 with no problems. I have pulled up numerous Corvettes, a Suburban, tons of Cavalier sized cars, and a Ranger. I have a good battery within 1 foot of the winch So I am sure that helps.

I have even used it to pull pallets of material forward, non rolling load, once on the trailer.

Should be a piece of cake to pull a BX with it then .

Well it's not stolen, went down and got it registered. A whopping $27. for plate and 2 year reg. $60. for sales tax, about an hour and a quarter of my time. Not Bad :)

I was really worried about the trailer scrapping going up and down my driveway, I've got a funky apron that comes up to the town sidewalk and then the driveway goes up from there about 10-15 degrees, to my surprise it didn't scrape at all, even my 10 ft dumper scrapes the jack pad.

I called the trailer company today, they actually answered the phone on a sat. They said the axle tubes they use for 5 tons have a thicker outer wall.
They also told me they would use this same steel frame for a 5 ton.
I think this trailer is more geared to the hobbyist as opposed to full time contractor use but should be fine for me for now. Also I wont feel guilty about it sitting around collecting dust/rust for the price I paid for it. This trailer sells for around $4,000. new at the local dealer.

Do you know if the reg 7 pin wiring provides power for reverse lights?
The guy put a couple lights on the fenders that he said go on when in reverse, I see an extra wire he has going into the plug but the lights didn't go on when I had my truck in reverse. I haven't even poked around on the thing yet, so maybe I'll figure it out.

Also is there a hot wire in the 7 pin configuration even when no lights or brakes are on? cause that's how the winch worked but it wouldn't work when I unplugged the trailer harness, is the power always on for the break away system? and the trailer battery is just for a complete separation of truck and trailer?

I'm not expecting much from that winch, the cable isn't long enough for a snacth block, the guy said he pulled a full size truck up on to the bed with it though.

JB, in pic 3351, is that romex ?

If you mean the trailer wiring, no it's not house wire, did look odd to me like that underground wire or uf but it's just got a gray plastic sheath on it.

JB.
