Equipment Trailer Question

   / Equipment Trailer Question #11
If your trailer is over 10K pounds, your will need a CDL A to transport anything!

And that is way too large a load for and F-150.

Good luck.

This is a untrue statement.
If you exceed $26,001 GVW then you will need a CDL.

I think you are right on this. I just recently let my Class A CDL license go. My work no longer required it for what I do and that was the only reason I obtained it before.

If your trailer is more than 10K you need a CDL A. I have a CDL B, but can not tow a trailer more than 10K GVW because then I am over weight, no matter the tow vehicle.

Not always true, depends on what state you're in and whether or not you are being compensated for using it.

That pintle hitch just unbolts and can be replaced with a 2 5/16 ball hitch in about 10 minutes and $40.

Don't want to get into a match here!
For the last 3 years we have had the state DOT here and they have done seminars reguarding this issue.

GENERAL PROVISIONS FOR COMBINATIONS
A combination registration is required for a towing vehicle when the trailer is registered in excess of 10,000 pounds and the cumulative weight of both vehicles exceeds the registered weight of the tow vehicle.
A truck towing a trailer does not need to be registered in combination or have a registered gross weight sufficient to cover the weight of the truck and the trailer if the trailer is registered for 10,000 pounds or less However, each vehicle must be in compliance with its own registered weight.

If you read the text is states a Combination Registration not a Combination License.

I stand corrected.

Not the last mistake I'll make.

But right now, I'm in the process of buying a trailer to to trnsport my equipment, and I am going to stay under 10K so i will encounter NO issues.

Except the rest of the DOT regulations like med card and log books.

The 10k thing is completely dependent on the state. Here in SC no special license/no med cards/no log book is needed for a trailer over 10k as long as the entire rig is under 26k. Other states vary, I own property in NC and if it was my legal residence I would need a different drivers license for my truck/trailer:confused2:
As it is now I use it up there a lot but I'm good on my regular ole SC drivers license.

I agree with the others this is alot of trailer and tractor for your truck, things to consider are brakes and suspension, I hope you have a trailer brake controller if your going to attempt this. Im not trying to doubt your truck or abilities but I tow alot and know the effects of a trailer the size your looking at with loads on it and I have a 3/4 ton Diesel.

Bottom line is BE CAREFUL!
