Hey I know what you mean, the psi and cfm sounds really low to me too. I haven't touched a carbon arc torch in years. So I thought they may have improved them. I know they use to really eat the air. Do you really think you need one? Man these things can move the iron, just can't see where the average guy needs one! There is nothing romantic about them! One thing you can count on, is getting burned. One time I spent good part of a day arcing out some flatbar that was fully welded inside about a 20 inch square box. The sparks had nowhere to go but right back in my face! Oh what fun!

I dont think I will have much need for one right now, but I am sure I will when I start working on heavy equipment. I was thinking of getting one soon, so I will be decent with one then, and I will have a good way of removing welds now.

Oh, well that make sense now!;) Nothing beats a carbon arc for removing bad / broken welds, or opening up a crack! Just remember when using a carbon arc before welding, grind all the carbon tracks out of the weld zone!

Well I sure have alot of bad welds at times:laughing: I find the roots always look like crap, but the cap pass normaly looks good. I am sure it will get better when I get a dc machine, and start using 7018s.

I'd start with the PowerPlasma 50's. They are easy to use. Several people here have them, and its a good unit to handle about any thickness most people will come across on average. Its small and portable. It also is an inverter with the more reliable IGBT's to power it.

Mark,

I just ordered and received a SuperCut 50P and because of the manual that doesn't say much about using the cutter, I googled the model hoping to find additional information. I didn't but what I did find was alarming.

I came across a few boards where you were less than enthusiastic about the SuperCut and didn't like its reliability. Like here, you encourage the PowerPlasma series.

Now I have a big concern, did I buy a model that is not reliable? Should I send it back and replace it with the PowerPlasma?

Money isn't an issue and I am an on-occasion user, when I need it, I need it and I need it to work, reliably.

Bob

Its not our best unit. Everything from the torch to the type start is different from the PP50. IF you are going to use it occasionally, it will probably serve. But the PP50 has consumables that can be bought many places pretty easily. Also the PP50 consumables last longer, and cut a little more precisely. They are also IGBT based instead of MOSFET based. The super cuts have HF points that need to be adjusted from time to time. The PP50 does not.

I wish you had called me to order it, and I would have put you with the best unit for you to begin with.

We do have the 6 month trade in policy...Call whoever you bought it from and discuss it with them if you want to trade it in.

Mark, About how much of the range of the Power I-TIG 200 would I have if I used one with my 5500w generator? I think it's 5k running, 5.5 starting.

You'll need to make sure its a clean power genset. As we recommend at least 6800 watts, I hesitate to tell you what you can and can't do on an underpowered generator...You're still a 1000 watts short on a conservative estimate. You 'll do better running it in the 110V mode.

It's a Honda. I used my Lincoln tombstone with it this summer and it was blowing the breaker at 75 amps IIRC.. not much success.

Most hondas are clean...wouldn't state that as 100% and I would suggest you try to find some info on your model.

You can probably squeak by up to 160 amps, IF you promise not to try to push it beyond.
