I need some advice from those with experience here. How does expanded metal work for a trailer deck?

I'm looking at a used trailer that has an expanded metal deck. The frame members are about 2 feet apart. It's an older car hauler type trailer. Maybe it's just that I'm used to seeing wooden decks on all of the newer trailers, but it seems expanded metal would not be strong enough.

I'll probably end up buying the trailer anyway if the price is right. I'm just wondering if I should plan to replace the deck with 2X8's or something in the near future if I buy it.

Well, the point is pretty much moot now.

The guy called me back and said that there was a misprint in the paper. It was supposed to be $1450 rather than $450. I was thinking I had a fair deal at $450. There are no trailer brakes, there's a crack in the tongue, and there is no way of telling what color it ever was.

I could have made a good trailer out of it for $450, but not for much more than that.

For future info! I have a 1/4" expanded metal deck on my 16' utility trailer. It sure is handy for tie down, ect.. I can carry loose material by throwing some old plywood on it. I think you are right about the real value on the trailer :)

Good point. Thanks!

Does the expanded metal seem to hold up? Is it strong enough to carry a small Tractor?

I have not used it for my new Kubota but I have hauled an old IH444 45hp piece of iron on it that probably weighs almost as much. Just haven't had the need to take the Kubota anywhere. The floor seems to be holding up quite well with no rusting problems.
