Invoice is not what the dealers pay. A car dealer here even said that at the end of their radio commercial. The dealers get back end money. I'm not sure exactly how it works. I think they have incentives to sell different vehicles like sell X amount of trucks you will get X amount from the manufacturer. The larger dealers usually have better prices because they can sell more and get more back end money. I had a guy that worked at a dealership explain to me about the back end money a little one time. Most people will not discuss it. I think they take an oath that they will not talk about back end money before they can become a salesman;) I had a dealer tell me if he got a truck off another lot he would loose his back end money and the price would be higher than trucks on his lot.

That is why I said incentives and holdbacks. If you were a manufacturer and one dealership sold 2 million and another sold 150 million, which one would you support the most? CJ

Pretty simple illustration right there!

As I dig a little deeper in the numbers, if the initial sticker price is what is used when describing how much off you are, looks like am in the neighborhood of $12,500 off and I countered with $13,000 off. They were too low on my trade, in my opinion, as they offered $7000, but told me if I had a "fresh service", new tires and a "professional" detail they could go $9000. My response was for the $13,000 off sticker and $9500 for my trade. Explained that it was 500 miles till time for service as it has been serviced at 3000 miles religiously and that the tires were not to the wear bars yet. I sent this picture as lack of understanding about the detail. Looks like is beading up pretty good to me in yesterdays rain. Am looking into another possible deal in case this one doesn't come together. I am satisfied with the price on their truck, but don't want to take a beating on my truck. I feel they can get $13K-$14K for it and would be willing to leave that much on the table for convenience. I even sent a link to a truck with higher mileage, less options and worse condition with a higher asking price on their same street.

Just sell your truck yourself.

That may be what it comes to. My schedule is pretty busy and without a "spare" vehicle, trying to sale myself is inconvenient, but may be what I have to do.

That's very odd they told you to do all that stuff to the truck and they'd give you $2000 more for it. I like how you held firm on the price you want for your truck and how much you want off the new one. If they want to sink that kinda money into your truck then that's on them if they end up getting it. They need to keep the lights on, but that ain't your problem.

It is sad, but true. I deal in hydraulic sales and quite a few of our suppliers [most in fact] set you up per annual sales. The more you move the better discounts you get. It is just a fact in the sales world. CJ

IMO you're giving away thousands when you trade a nice vehicle in. My last truck only was bringing $6k on trade offers and I sold it for $10k cash. That's $4k extra to deal with tire kickers and low ballers. Its work but worth it.

I don't know what its like in the States, but here you don't pay sales tax on the value of your trade, so it can be a wash as to whether you sell it privately or use it as a trade.

Can't vouch for all states, but in CA, the BUYER pays the sales tax, not the seller. So if I trade in a vehicle, the dealership has to deal with it. If I sell it myself, the new buyer is responsible for all taxes and registration costs.
