F250 6.2 V8 vs F150 Ecoboost

I have a 1999 F250 V10 that could pull the BP with the 5075E on it, but I'm impressed by the Ecoboost.

I searched long and hard for a good used Ford or Dodge V10 or a 8L GM for their rated towing ability and only ran across one Ford V10, as I recall, and it was too worn for my needs. So I ended up purchasing a new Ram 2500 diesel. Like good, used, heavy duty farm equipment, it is difficult to find big block pickup trucks used for a reasonable price. I would seriously consider keeping that V10.

I seriously considered purchasing a 1/2 ton Ford EB but they would not deal much at all. In the end I really questioned purchasing a HD 1/2 ton to pull 11k+# trailer. So I bought my loaded Ram 2500 diesel for $6k more and got the stronger chassis, brakes, engine, rear end, transmission, etc, etc. And it is rated to pull 17.1k# on the bumper with no WD and came with the goose neck/5th wheel package and all of the other heavy duty goodies.

I would never sell my V10 F250. I got it for a steal, and plan to run it to the ground.

The EB's do command quite a price tag for the 4x4 models, wow. I bought my 2007 Silverado LT2 CC with 18K miles for $20K in 2009. Almost hard to believe I paid "so little" for it.

FWIW, F150 towing wise I just ordered what will be the third set of tires for my ecoboost truck.

The stock tires were stock tires and wore out at around 35,000 miles.

I put on a set of Michelin LTX MS2 load range D. Hands down they are great down to about -5° F before getting sketchy on ice. I've run the second set of LTX tires for 37,000 miles, and starting last year in the Fall, one tire likely screaming about heat generated from my towing loads, has apparently started to delaminate. After putting in a running total of 15 tire plugs (yes, 15 plugs with four more tiny holes yet to be plugged) even I decided maybe I should stop milking the tread (I'm about an 1/8" off of the wear bars) and take advantage of the buy three get 1 free along with the $70.00 mail-in rebate sale that ends August 31st.

Since I thoroughly love the Michelin LTX MS2 tire series, I'm putting on Load range E versions this Friday. I plan to run them at 40-45 psi to preserve the ride in my truck although the tire is rated to 60 psi.

Are you satisfied with less than 40,000 per set of tires? Do you contribute the wear to the towing? Friend of mine put 50,000 on the stock Pirelli 20" tires. How many miles total on truck?

I have 18" wheels. My truck is likely carrying 6500 pounds with my junk in it all the time (dry weight is something like 5800ish pounds on a 157" WB F150, 3.5L 4x4). Apart from the one tire apparently delaminating (a problem in the entire tire industry), the Michelins would be fine for many more miles except for a little hydroplaning through deep puddles at speed in your area. In my area, going into winter with a 1/4" of tire tread is asking for trouble or worse.

My factory tires made it 36,000 miles. I put on Goodyear Dura Tracs and so far so good with 64,000 miles. They should easily go to 80K.

I get about 20k out of a set of back tires maybe less on my f250, the only time the truck is used is heavy towing and most of it is short trips, less than 20 miles. I quit rotating tires, I just pull the back set off move the front to the back and put new ones on the front. That's just the way it is towing with something with a bunch of torque. I am sure a dually would help with tire wear immensely but I can't justify it. CJ

Been looking for first vehicle for my oldest daughter. Has had her heart set on a Jeep Wrangler. Found one 300 miles away in north Alabama. Very hilly compared to what we see in south Mississippi. Trip going up running mostly 70 mph with trailer empty netted approximately 12 mpg. Coming back loaded with cruise set on 75 mph most of the way retuned approximately 8.5 mph. On occasion would drop from 6th to 5th and if steep for a long distance would occasional drop to 4th. Once it dropped to 4th it would pretty quickly be back at 75 mph and hold it with no problem.
