When I was a Kid it was if the damage was 1/2 the value of the vehicle they would total it out. Now days it seems like if you do $9500 damage to a $10,000 car they will not total it out.

Not exactly the same but...

A friends S-10 was rear ended. It was $50 from being totaled. Insurance fixed it. In the mean time he drove a rental on their dime for a week. I'm sure the rental cost more than $50.

I see a lot of people snatching up the 05 cummins trucks up here. A customer of my cousin has 4 of them now, his son just bought one. Nice truck. Id live a 1993, just because I love the look of the first gen regular cab 4wd trucks.

I am tempted to pick up this rust free first gen but I would be afraid to actually use it in the winter due to salt on every road.

I've got a '92 5 speed 4x4 with Lucas Prince of Darkness injectors and a big turbo. Got it my senior year in high school. Unfortunately it hasn't been running in a while. Long story. :(

I remember sitting in a Dodge dealership ready to buy one of those.

Same here. They were all kinds of rebates on the first gens in the spring of 1994. I could of afforded the payment, but the insurance rate was the deal killer for me. Was only driving three years.

Post pics of the first gen please!

Let's say the short block is $7,000, the turbos are $5,000, misc parts are $1,500, labor is $3,000, and car rental is $200 for the week. Is there a point at which whatever company is paying for the warranty repairs just gives up, and "totals" the vehicle?

Having been employed by GM dealerships for the last 3+ decades, including 20 yrs at my current place, here's how it works. Also most of the major manufacturers I know about follow the same procedure.

If the vehicles manufacturers is paying the bill for warranty repairs, including the powertrain coverage for 100K miles(or more), a vehicle will never be totaled based on repair costs. If the total cost for parts and labor exceed a certain amount(based on the specific vehicle and options) it will most likely be closely scrutinized and anything questionable will be debited back against the dealer. Trust me...dealers in general eat A LOT of $$ because the manufacturer does its best to control costs. Yes the dealer appeals and sometimes recovers the debit, but not always.

Now where it gets interesting is with 'aftermarket' warranty policies...3rd party types. And don't believe what the salesman told you when they say everything is covered. The key is to read the fine print because every ounce of coverage is CLEARLY spelled out. Most policies state the replacement parts will be of equal or like kind as the OEM part. What that means is 99.9% of the time it is aftermarket, reman or used parts. If the $$ amount exceeds whatever limit they set... for example: a long block, turbo, radiator etc...they'll pay for and sometimes supply(they can get used components cheaper than we can due to volume purchases) a complete used engine and a no name radiator. I've seen this example or similar many many times. The 3rd party insurance companies have never totaled a vehicle based on mechanical or electrical failures to my knowledge, but they sure as heck can squeeze a dollar out of a dime sometimes.;)

One other point worth mentioning is your warranty policy's cost is based on the specific vehicle and they have all the bases covered so as to minimize their expenses and charge you the max while being competitive. Same with the OEM warranty policy, the warranty expense is built into the price you pay when the vehicle is purchased.

I really had to dig into my past to find those. Ah good times. When I bought that truck I could fill it up for what would be pocket change today.

Thanks TCBoomer, my truck was repaired under the factory warranty with new factory parts so yay for me, but I will keep that in mind if I decide buy another warranty.

My dream truck would be an early Cummins in mint condition with low miles. It doesn't make as much power as my common rail, but you can probably put sticks in 3 older Cummins for the price of them in 1 common rail.

I have said for years I would love to have a 03.5 to 07.5 Ford F-350 SRW with the Torque Shift tranny powered by a 12V 5.9L Cummins. There is a company that does 5.9L Cummins swaps but its pretty pricey. I would have to be in need of major repairs before I considered it.

Cant fix stupid. We had the same thing happen with a 07 Mercury Milan. The little lady got into a accident and they estimate was $7,200 By the time it was all done the repairs were over $13,000 and they still never totaled it. I sold it a week after it came back from the body shop. No way I was going to keep it after all that.

They keep it for about 2 months while we were in a rental the entire time due to delays with adjusters and hidden damage.

97 was the last year of the old body style. Ford skipped the 98 model year and introduced the 99 Super Duty early.

what i'd love to find.. as a farm truck.. would be a f350 drw, 4wd. and auto tranny.. old body style.. even if it had the old style handle and push button door handles.. .. maybee the fore / aft tanks in the fenderwell..e tc.. while I'm 'wishing' :) it would have ok paint.. no real rust. be in average condition.. ac and radio working ( latter easy to remedy ) and a GN plate or pop up or flip over in the bed.. oh and be less than 200K miles.. and not cost an arm and a leg.. :) ( now blow out the candles :) )
