Farmers lobbying for the right to fix own tractors

Well Ronnie the large local farmer around here is buying up all of the local farmland with gubmint money and not having to pay the local taxes that we as homeowners must pay.

The bad part is they won't allow anyone on the property and are quite adamant about it.

I have absolutely NO respect for this kind of behavior.

Bottom line if your business WHATEVER it is, can't make it on it's own then get out of business.

So what if the milk price has gone to heck, drink beer instead.

Regards, Fred

I don't expect now, or ever ANY help from our broken, criminal gubmint.

Not sure about other oems but Deere started allowing the retail of their diagnostic software to customers a number of months ago. It does not allow for re-programming but the diagnostic portion can be bought (subscription based). It is... however.... very expensive (it's also very expensive for dealers) to justify the purchase the owner or irc needs to have lots & lots of machines to work on. At this point in time (and I could be wrong) dealer groups can also decline the resale to a customer or irc.

My Mahindra has a standard OBDII diagnostics port just like my car and truck. I use the same code scanner on the tractor as I use on the truck. All you need are the specialized codes once in awhile but most times the a standard code scanner will get you though.

I know very few farmers that have the skills, tools, to diagnosis and repair one of the new high dollar combines. What happens when he shorts out thirty thousand dollars of electronic and then becomes irate when the Dealer says not covered by warranty?

The new truck I just purchased had a MSRP of a little over $60,000. More electronics than the space capsule that landed a man on the moon had. Warranty voided if I go fooling around. So which do I do, fool around with truck repairs or take to the dealer and drink coffee while he repairs it or provides me a loaner.

My choice is take to the dealer.

So you are jealous the farmer can purchase land, get current use tax value, and doesn't want others to use the land. Do I have that right? And what leads you to believe that he is using gubmint money?

If anyone really understood what it took to own, use and maintain the diagnostic tools no one would want them! Its not as easy as plugging into a USB port.

I personally do support the right to modify your equipment though. Part of this right-to-own thing is the manufacturers trying to claim copyright and ownership of software and the way it works. Thats annoying to me. If your smart enough to tweak with the software in a product that you own it should be your right to do that.
