We actually pay $5 per gallon for milk, but we buy it fresh from a local farmer. We get all of our milk, cheese, yogurt and many fresh vegitables from him.

Yes, the feds say we are breaking the law (or is it him breaking the law, or both? shrug) because we are not allowed to buy milk from our neighbors anymore. Too bad. I have no interest in my kids getting their fill of hormones and who knows what else, so we buy all that we can from local folks.

It's worth it to me to buy locally, paying more, but knowing what I'm getting, what's in it, and more importantly, what's not in it.

When you buy fresh milk right from the tank it is whole milk and non-homogenized right? So do you still need to shake it up before it looks like milk? No vitamin A or D fortification by the govt either right? I bet it's good.

From the bulk tank just after milking. No Pasteurization or Homogenization. Cream rises to the top, and we just shake it to mix it up before pouring. Yes, it is really good... particularly since we are asked to pay less for this than the fully processed variety at the grocery store. Too bad not everyone can get the real deal.

Just for information: Do not drink non processed cow's milk.:D You will never appreciate the store version ever again.:( Also note, some breeds of cows have a much higher butterfat content.

If memory serves me correctly let milk set in the fridge for a few hours and then just drink the top portion of the jug.:D Spoiled for life.

Absolutely. Not even from the tankl...this is a small family operation with only three cows. Right from the cow to the mason jar! We get a jar of skim for my one son who likes that on his cereal. They also make sour cream, yogurt, cheeses and other dairy products.

When we run out and hove to go to Food Lion to get a gallon, it's like sacrelidge!

I remember doing that when I was a kid. I'd get up before my four older sisters and just carefully pour the top of the bottle onto my oat flakes. Then I'd pour a big glass of it. They rarely got the good stuff. ;)

We have a Nubian milk goat that gives fantastic milk. My son and I go out each morning and evening to milk her. Yes, store bought milk is bland now! :)

We want to get a Jersey some time soon. Love the rural life!

Don't you know all that butter fat will kill you?
