Spreader Fertilizer Spreader BX 2200???

Can you use it for sand or is that to heavy/abrasive?

140 pounds. I am trying to look at my packing slip and really can't read the shipping weight on it but I think it says 62lbs. I have also looked on the web site for herdseeder but it doesn't say how much it weighs.

Now I am 6'1" and weigh around 250. Am I fat for 46, I would say so, but I have also had a few babes tell me I wear it well. But why would anybody want to drag something that weighs 140lbs in and out of my low ceiling shed that the tractor doesn't fit it when I can do it with something that weighs 62 pounds. If you want to throw 140lbs around, go for it. Im just lazy, I will do the 62. I bought my CUT and implements to make things easier.

Apparently babes like fat men /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and I guess that explains my problem /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. As to the spreader, those pics above look way to big for a BX or small compact. I think those are about twice the size of the small Herd unit (An extension is available to increase it's capacity). Why aren't more small implements made for all the small tractors that are being sold?

I agree with you on the smaller implements. Manufactures have tried to make an item work on many different tractors. Yes I have gotten up there in years and that is exactly why I like things light. I just couldn't imagine throwing 140lb spreeder around. Yes if I let the spreeder outside or could back in my shed it may be a different story. Yes I can lift 140lbs. But why? It just seems stupid for me. Yes some young guy, but even some day he will think the same. Look at Henro, with them two mugs of beer, he could probably carry the two mugs and the 140lb spreeder. As far as the extension, I didn't get it. I can do two acres with stopping once and filling it up again. The big guys can't do it one fill so why should I.

I've got a BX2200 also and really enjoy it. I recently ordered a rather large PTO powered fertilizer spreader from Agri Supply. After delivery, I thought WOW...that's bigger than I thought. However I pushed it up behind my BX and hooked it up. I had to shorten the drive shaft as well as build a shorter top link (I'm guessing maybe 10"). Got it all hooked up and it works fine.

After admiring it for a while, I decided to install some wheels on the spreader. I did a little measuring and located the mounting points for the 4 wheels. Now all I have to do is roll the spreader up to the back of the tractor, attach the arms, top link and PTO and I'm in business. Didn't have to lift anything. So, I really don't care if the spreader weighs 62 lbs. or 250 lbs. all I do is roll it around. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

If you'd like pictures, let me know and as soon as it warms up just a little bit, I'll install the spreader, shoot some pictures and post em'.

Yes post the pictures. I love looking at nifty ideas. I guess I would have never thought of that. And it would make a 140lb spreeder move easy.

That price you're being quoted on the Herd is interesting as I bought mine new for somewhere under $400. (Don't recall the exact amount as it was three years ago)

Another option is the pull type spreaders. I have knowledge that Sweet Tractors stocks them.

I paid $350.00 for mine and that included shipping. I got mine last spring some time.

As far as pull types I think they are more expensive and not as flexible when you only have two acres. If I had a larger lot I guess I would seriously look into one.

I'm surprised At TSC.. everyone I talk to says there store doesn't have them.. whereas both the local stores in my area have them.. just goes to show wy some outfits struggle to make money.... insufficient stock supplied to incirrect stores to fulfill demand...

Anyway, the 'shaft' looks like a peice of 2 or 4 wire hyd hose with crimp on endsas an outter sheath, with a seperate multijointed shaft on the inside. Pto coupler was not splined.. just a hollow smooth hub of 1 3/8 to go over the tractor pto shaft.. then uses an allen headed set screw to torque it down.

I guess the flex shaft would work ok. My herdseeder did come with a shaft too long for my TC21D. I figured out how much I had to cut off, and you have to cut both ends and then took it to a machine shop and he cut it for about $15.00. You had to also take the shield off and have it cut also. I did that myself with just a plain old hack saw. All in all that worked out good for me.

Now you know my wife made me take the TC21D back in because she saw the tractor tip to one side once when I was doing some loader work on a hill. The bucket caught it so I wasn't worried. But SHE MADE ME GET A TC29D. I really didn't want to go along with her but I did. I normally get the last two words in "yes dear". Anyway what I am trying to say here is, I had to order a new pto shaft for the 29 since the one I cut off was now too short.

Couldn't agree more, Tres. I think you and I met on these boards over some similar topic, and we may have agreed on that one item, if perhaps for one or two others.

Just to restate: I LOVE the Herd spreader for the BXes/2210/Small Boomers if you are going to use it for throwing out fertilizer, lime pellets, and occasionally grass seed. I LOVE the Befco model for granualted fertilizer, pellets, sand and salt. You can throw seed too, but don't expect much accuracy or application metering.

If I get a chance, I'll take a shot of the Befco on my 2210 for perspective. I'm 5'9", 180 pounds and expend very little energy attaching this spreader @65 pounds. BTW, I stay fairly lean, at my babe-repelling weight, by using a very accurate professional walk-behind spreader for any seed I throw down. That may happen once each year and I can wander around my 4 acres in a morning. Everything else at my Ponderosa attaches to my tractor.

I have an e-mail into the distributor for Herd to see if I can get a list of retail sellers within a 100 miles radius. I hope I can find someone willing to sell it for less then retail, if not, based on how you folks say the Herd is the way to go, I may just spend the $$$. But hate to buy something for retail, got to be someone willing to sell it for less. Guess if I was buying a tractor with the seeder that would be different. we will see. I guess the second option is the one at TSC, Worksafer, for $300, but the closest TSC is 140 miles away, when you add gas, time and tax I am in the same range as the Herd locally. I really do not know about that flexible shaft on the TSC unit.

That is what I did. It took them a few days to get back to me. They gave me the name of a distributor and then the distributor gave me the name of a dealer in my area. It ended up that pretty much any dealer could buy from the distributor.

It was lucky cause when I called my dealer, he gave me the $350.00 price and he told me if I let him know in the next hour I could get it yet the same day. He just happen to have a truck up there.

Picture of it attached. It just sits in the corner of the shed right now. If I ever get rid of my sister-n-law I will get my shed back so I can properly store things.

How difficult is it to open and close the feed gate to shut off the flow when you are driving? or do you shut off the PTO. How many bags of fertilizer can you fit in it at one time? Kinda get the line of questions here?? I kinda feel funny buying something I have never seen other then what is on the Herd web site and pics here. Thanks for the help.

3-pt. mounting is easy and fast. Quick-tach, shielded, telescoping tumbling shaft allows you to lower broadcaster for easy filling.

Two control handles, one upper and one lower, for ease of control.

Rotating agitator over opening for even feeding.

4-Bladed fan with lap-over blades 'spreads' and does not 'blow'

Broadcasts fertilizer and all types of seeds including brome grass, in amounts from 2 lbs. of seeds to 500 lbs. of fertilizer.


This is from the web page. On top it says capacity 200lbs, at the bottom it says up to 500 lbs of fertilizer spreading?

I am almost positive I can put 4 bags in the hopper. But it seems like you get it pretty full at that time so I usually put 3 and one half. It takes two fills for my lawn so I just fill it partial. But my memory is messing with me. Minimum would be 2 and one half bags. You can buy the optional extension to give you more capacity.

The spreader has a depth gauge on it and it gives you many diffferent things you can spread with it. I did use it to spread grass seed and it worked great.

The Herd Spreader along with most of the other ones out there will tend to spray heavy to one side. I usually watch for which side it is and I also will set the spreader to about half of what I want, go one direction first and then perpendicular second. So I make two passes.

Now I find that if you use regular fertilizer the thing works great. But if you use the fertilizer like what you get from Scotts or other brands with the chemicals in it, it won't spread the best, but mostly pattern drops down on it. I never get the scott's or anything like that. The guy that layed my sod told me never to buy that stuff. He also told me I didn't need any weed killers or anything if I keep my lawn healthy. So far last year he was right. He also told me to fertilize every 6 weeks.

The handle to turn it on and off was really close on my TC21, but on my TC29 I do have to reach some. But I can weld an extension on it. Sometimes fertilizer gets in the path and you have to move it back and forth some to get it to close.

Hope I didn't ramble too much and if you lived in the area you would be welcome to use it before you buy. My neighbor likes using it also and he has a John Deere 4100.

The PTO shaft has grease zirks to go into bearings. The blade and spindle has grease zirks to go into just the shaft. There is no bearings in that area. You must make sure you grease it everytime before using it.

Yes, the Herd spreader does make a dandy storage container doen't it?
The handle is easy to reach from a BX or a 2410 size unit. I can get nearly four 50 lb bags of fertilizer in mine without the extension. I have done a binch of seeding with mine as well and it throws rye, fescue, alfalafa, clover, broam very nicely. I grease the multiple zerks before use and always wash it out. I sometimes wipe it with an oil rag or squirt the funnel with WD40. Mine has many years of use left in it. J
