Finally starting an addition on our shed

Got most of the first row of sheathing and the ridge board set today. I got my master rafter worked out so tomorrow I just need to trace and cut the rest. If all goes well, I hope to.get it decked tomorrow.

We picked up 6 sets of scaffolding yesterday so we'll be able to safely do the rest of the sheathing and install.the siding. It's starting to actually look like a building now.

The sheathing did take all.the sway put of it, it was probably for the best that I broke down and did it. The sway had brought the building slightly out of square but a little push with the tractor up high fixed it right up and the sheathing locked it in.

Outstanding. Nice to see that you are installing the sheets full and then cutting out your openings. It's kind of nit picking, but using the full sheets on your outside corners will give you more strength. Then rip one to fit somewhere in the middle.

Where did you get your scaffolding? I need to buy some and have been looking at what Northern Tool has for sale.

I got the scaffolding from a contractor that's replacing his with new in Laredo. $75 a section, 6' 4" x 5' wide. It's a long haul from Tyler but, depending on how much you need, the savings might be worth it. His name is Hector, 956-231-6852.

I can see that it's going to be like a tractor or forklift. I got by fine without it but, now that I have it I'll wonder how that was ever possible. It would've been invaluable when I was building my shop. It'll be really useful for this project both for the siding and for drywall. And it'll make a fantastic deer tower blind when I'm not building with it.

Ran out of nails for the rafter straps so I had to call it a day. I think I made pretty good progress.

Looks good. Nice to see the hurricane clips on the rafters.

For the rest of the sheathing, make sure that you have a full sheet spanning the first and second floors. Ideally, you want a ~third of a sheet overlapping between the floors and would want the joints staggered.

I've been going back and forth on running the next course of sheathing horizontally to connect the 2 floors. I think I'll end up with less cutting if I do but, I need to measure my distance to the roofline to be sure.

It would have been nice to be able to get 10' OSB for this...

I hear you. If you can afford it and manage it (connecting the two floors) I would highly recommend it. With the the basic box structure you have, there is a lot of sail area. Without the reinforcement of the OSB spanning the floors, you will get racking and swaying in one of our regular thunderstorms.

I got enough OSB to fully sheath the exterior, including the 1st to 2nd floor transition. I had to go get nails this morning, left about 8 and got back just after 11, one of the few drawbacks to living rural. I got the rest of my hurricane straps installed, strapped the side to the walls and put in the rest of the collar ties. I still need to frame the gables and put in the rafter ties, I'm going to do some of that off the scaffolding.

I setup a course of the scaffolding, got another course of sheathing installed horizontally on one side and put up.a second course of scaffolding.

It doesn't look like I accomplished a lot today but, I was working solid all day.

That scaffolding looks nice.

For everyone who thinks it's cheaper to go up, just imagine how much longer, and how much more time it will take to work on the second floor then a single story. Because of the added time everything takes to work up higher, it's always more expensive to go up, compared to a single story.
