Firearms/NRA/Gun Laws

Jason, this is very interesting. Our views are not as different as I had expected. I have a degree in Wildlife Conservation, so I understand all the pros and cons of hunting. If I did hunt, I would do as you do, whatever was killed would have to be used.

I've typed and re-typed a response to this thread and find it very difficult to clearly get my thoughts across. I'll try once again.
The right to bear arms, a constitutional right, is so key to many of the rights we should have. But what we have here in California is a slow, steady, unrelenting push to eventually remove every right as a property owner. The do-gooders don't believe that the average person has the basic intelligence to handle any of lifes responsibilities. Their solution is to remove any and all freedoms and replace them with government control because we're all too stupid and inept to take care of ourselves, our property, and that which belongs to others.
I'm sorry, but when I see in this thread that we need to license, to test, to create new hardships to owning guns I want to scream. Have you lost faith in your fellow man. I ask you, how did we survive as a society for the last 225 years without these rules, laws, licenses, etc.. There were always stupid people, there will always be stupid people that society needs to deal with through our laws. But far and away the vast majority of the people of the United States are decent, caring, thoughtful individuals. What's changing today is that due to our information age if the news companys can't sell you a box of cereal while telling you about a gun incident within your hometown, they'll look further in your state, 2000 miles across the country, neighboring countries, the world. Why, because violence gets your attention, you'll watch, you'll read, their ratings will go up, they'll sell more advertising. Making you believe there's a crisis will make them lots of money. Wake up.
I've read about tractor accidents on this web site. There devastating. All you dumb farmers and stupid tractor drivers out there need to be licensed, before you get a tractor that could kill you or someone else you ought to be licensed and go through a safety course. And by the way, if you can't prove any good reason for having a tractor I think you shouldn't be allowed to have it. In fact any tractor over 15 horsepower being used on property of less than 2 acres, on land that is greater than 12 degrees in slope, on sunny days where your neighbors view is impaired, or his ears can detect the deisel sound, or noxious deisel emissions come through southeasterly winds......
I'm sure this all sounds stupid, but it was meant to be. I'm just sick of news stories saying that the U.S. has gone to hell and we need a new law. Again I ask, how did the poor dumb slobs who lived here before us survive without without the commercial news services. There isn't a crisis! We don't need to take away people's rights. They just want you to buy cereal.
I know most of you feel the way I do to some extent, and I'm not preaching to you, I'm just venting. But can you imagine what would happen if there wasn't a gun crisis to report about and Peter Jennings decided to look into compact tractors for a juicy story.

Branch,
You're right! TV and the media have a huge play in swaying much of the public to enact laws that aren't needed. How would you handle the situations happening in Ca? It sounds like Ca isn't the place for you. Come on up to NH or VT.

Jason, I got my BA in Wildlife Conservation in 1976 at C. W. Post Center of Long Island University. I did most of my wildlife field studies in the Catskill Mountain Area, since there isn't too much pristine woodland left on Long Island. I never was able to get full time work in wildlife management, so I got an MS in Marine Biology at the same school, in 1981. And with that degree in hand, I got a job with the New York State Health Dept. of Health inspecting health care facilities. Go figure!

Thanks for the offer, but my family goes back a few generations here and it's home. We've moved out to a little town to be around people that feel the way we do but unfortunately those that live in the big cities dictate how everyone lives. When L.A. has a shooting over a drug deal the news people whip up a frenzy and the pencils start flying to create a new law. Personally I'd like to see them hand out AK47's to all the gangbangers, load them on buses, take them out to the middle of the desert and let them kill each other. I don't have any simpathy for them or could you tell.
I mentioned in another post that there was a drug bust going on on my property. Well the Sheriff's left the stakeout late last Thursday and when they came back friday morning the plants had all been removed. Someone had been waiting and watching my property for them to leave. Now that makes me a little nervous. Where our place is situated we don't have any drapes on any of our windows and I'm feeling a little vulnerable. To those of you who'd like to see permits and licenses to have guns, how'd you like to live here and watch the place for me until I wait 30, 60, 90 days for a permit. But I could actually wait till hell freezes over because you can't get a permit in Calif..

I used to have an AK47. I left the bayonet off the end, and the big clips stayed in the safe.

I did put a low power scope on it, and a 5-round clip. It made an exceptional deer rifle. It was light weight, short, and easy to handle. It worked well for ranges shorter than 150 yards. It held up well in miserable hunting weather; very reliable.

If I wouldn't have mentioned AK47, I'd be almost exactly describing the classic Winchester 30-30 deer rifle. The AK had the same great attributes(maybe not as pretty, but...). In fact, the 7.62x39 cartridge is almost(almost!) the same power and ballistics as the grand old 30-30.

I put some good meat on the table with that rifle.

I hunt with rifle and hand gun. Later this year I hope to do more pig hunting with a handgun.

The NRA just seems to be the voice of those like myselft who feel threatened by any new restrictions on the rights to bear arms. Even though R stands for "rifle".

The liberals need to realize (I think most do, but they need the votes) that gathering up handguns won't decrease crime. Criminals will be criminals, and the only handguns that will be handed over those owned by law-abiding citizens. Those guns were not going to be used in crimes anyway.

Nobody has proposed gathering up all the handguns, but every restriction placed on ownership leads to that very thing. All you have to do is read the history of the gun control laws in Great Britain. One day the government wants to register your new gun. The next day they want to have a waiting period to buy one. The next day they want to register the guns you already own, then they want to make selected firearms illegal, then more selected firearms illeagel, then all guns illegal, then you have to turn them in or go to jail. They know you have the gun because you registered it.

We need to put a stop to it somewhere.

Something else that hacks me is the new "hate crime" legislation in Texas. If a white man kills a black man because he is a biggot, the penalty is more severe than if he kills the black man for his money. My God, if black or white man kills a white or black man he should go straight to the death chamber. What difference does it make WHY he killed the man? Much taxpayer $$ is going to be wasted in court while they debate whether or not the man who got his head blown off was hated, or just had some money. The punishment should be the same - death.

Branch -- Lord knows how I agree with you about laws. You ask how it came to be that we live in such a legislated nation. Can't help but wonder if the push for rights coupled with the abdication of personal responsibility had something to do with it...
