I agree with you Branch!!! We require drivers licenses too and does that cut down on the number of idiot drivers? Nope!

I was able to shoot at longer ranges. However, I felt that for hunting 150 yards was the most I wanted to shoot for the round, on deer sized animals. I did range work at longer distance though.

I have shot 30-30's at longer ranges on target, but again, feel it is most effective inside 150 yards as a hunting rifle/round.

Ballistically, the spire point on a 7.62x39 should retain down range velocity. The cooefficient for a 150 or 180gr round nose 30-30 is not very good. Ken waters did some interesting work with spire point bullets in a old "Pet Loads" article, for the 30-30.

In general though, with the scope and small clip on the AK47, it made a great brush gun.

RobertN,
Do you have trouble in Ca owning a AK-47? Does Ca require you to remove the high capacity clip? Or is that 5 round mag what you use for hunting? NH requires you to have no more than a 5 shot mag while hunting big game.

Doggone ... I hate it when that happens ... long post and something gobbled it up!
You just knew this topic was going to be contentious, didn't you? Yeah, I'm a member of the NRA ... although it does me no good whatsoever ... except philosophically. Since I'm not yet a citizen (but FINALLY got my green card ... yippee!) ... I have NO RIGHTS at all ... and cannot buy any type of firearm.
Most of you know that I'm Canadian ... so I can tell you all about restrictive (and stupid) gun laws. I lost a $25,000+ collection of firearms back in the 70's when the big lockdown cam about. Had to turn them all in to be destroyed ... no recompense, no choice, no appeal. Has it served the reason for the restrictions ... promoted by the weasels in the Liberal party as crime reduction? Not one iota ... but it did disarm a well armed population. And it's getting worse!
Like some of you others, I have a real fear of zealots and fanatics .... but all the ones I've met and read about are on the gungrabbing side. When I see the untruths, half-truths, and outrights lies (mostly phoney statistics) that are used to justify taking away guns ... then I just HAVE to question the motives.
By all means, enforce the laws on the books ... but get rid of half of them because they are illegal under the constitution of this country.
Yeah ... guns are used in the commision of crimes ... and there are murders ... but you'll note how violent crime ... and crime with guns ... has been reduced in those areas where the criminals have to wonder whether their victim is armed.
Can we actually restrict the criminal use of weapons with laws? Get real! Look at the news from other countries ... do terrorists have guns? Are the police ALL armed now in Britain? Where before the restrictive laws they mostly were unarmed and respected? Is Australia safer now that the gun-grabbers won?
Personally, I stopped hunting years ago ... I enjoyed the outdoors but didn't enjoy the work associated with processing my own meat ... I was happier to leave it to those making a profession of it.
Am I paranoid and need a gun around at all times? No. But I feel it is no different than my cameras, computers, cars, tractor, implements or any other possession. By itself it does nothing ... and I much resent being considered a potential criminal because I happen to enjoy target shooting with real honest-to-goodness firearms.
And ... finally ... I was born in Germany ... where the citizens are still living in shame for having allowed a nutcase to disarm the population ... and then perpetrate WWII on this planet. I do NOT think Heston is a nutcase for the "cold dead hand" speech ... I agree with him .... as long as the nutcases know they can't just waltz in and do what they want ... they'll behave themselves and simply keep running for elected (Democrat_ office.
ok ... <\soapbox>

too bad that common sense ain't

Thanks Cowboydoc. It's good to see the number of positive responses here, although the sample population is probably pretty skewed. I would suspect that most tractor owners and users are more of the "do it yourself" self-reliant, tinkering type, than the general population. It never ceases to amaze and appall me how ignorant of American history the general population seems to be and how willing they are to have their opinions on various subjects, some of them vital to the survival of the Republic, dictated to them by the media and political parties. It seems that a large percentage of Americans are willing to trade their freedoms for security and absolution from any personal responsibility for their actions. By the time they realize what a bad bargain they have made it may be to late to undo it. That's how the Roman Republic became the Empire and the Wiemar Republic the Third Reich. I'll get off the soapbox now and back on my tractor.

rmacan,
I'm glad you mentioned the Third Reich. Did you ever notice what the Massachusets State Police wear for a uniform? Very similar or exactly the same as what the Germans wore. The high boots and uniform. They also have the attitude towards hunters and weapons. That's the same state that has numerous rediculous gun, hunting and general laws. I can't stand that state!

Actually, I sold it a few years back to finance a heavy barrel 308 bolt action...

In Ca, the let people keep them if they legally owned them before the assualt law passed a few years ago.

We can still have hi cap mags, but can not buy new ones. Anything being sold, gun or mag, has had to meet that 10rnd limit for a few years now.

I cut a 30rnd clip down to 5; at the time they were not commercially available... We're also only 5rnd for hunting.

You know what gets me, is for all the laws, and uniform styling , and taxes, Mass is where most of our firearms originated, armouries, manufactures, ect. My favorite Savage 99 says Chicopee Mass right on the barrel.

Right there in the birth-spot of freedom...

RobertN,
That's my fathers favorite gun also. Nice shooting weapon. I'm a big bird hunter. I love upland game as well as ducks and geese.Springfield a big city for guns as well. Have you lived in Mass before? If you get a chance log on to the mass state police website and check out some of the laws. A great website for finding out gun laws in differnt states is www.packing.org

Nah, I'm one of those California natives... Born and raised and always lived just east of Sacramento. Gosh, I even remember when we had power /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I really like my Savage 99. I got it from a guy who bought it new in '56, shot five rounds over two hunting seasons, and then stored it.

I like the lever action, and the use of mid-range ammo, in regards to pointy bullets and hotter ballistics, as compared to the 30-30, .375 ect. This one is in .300; it handles and shoots great!

In fact, a little over a month ago I got a nice pig with it. Fine bbq!
