First Rollover!!

So if an engine laying on it's side lets oil run into the cylinders, wouldn't letting it sit for an equal amount of time on it's feet let it run back out?

I've never messed with injectors, and don't really want to. I'd think if mine did that, and laid on it's side for 4 hours, I'd let it sit for 8 hrs and then try it.

Is my logic flawed??????????????

THKS.

Instead of pulling the injectors, how about pulling the glow plugs? Seems like that would be simpler...and more easily done by a novice like me anyway.

Personally I would not assume that if the oil leaks in when the tractor is on its side that it would leak back out of the cylinders when the tractor is righted. The piston rings might pass oil in the abnormal direction, and hold it in otherwise, sort of like a check valve...

To carry the thougt a step farther, when the tractor is righted, how does one verify whether oil is in there or not? Crank the engine with the injectors (or glow plugs) out, and watch for oil spray?

If I had a choice, I would take the glow plugs out myself if it were a usable solution. Just seems more fool (or should I say Henro) proof... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good Point Henro. I was going to pull the plugs anyway to check them. By cranking with the plugs out do I achieve the same effect that I would by pulling the injectors (releasing the pressure in the cylinder)?

Any ideas on this would be GREATLY appreciated!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Looks like it will handle the situation well. Just remember to bring along some padding to protect the machine from the chain that is going to bring it back on its "feet". How are you going to get it to where you are going to service it? I suggest that you consider having some old tires along with you in the event that it needs to be pushed somewhere. That blade looks like it can do a lot of damage without even trying. See if he can push the loader closed while you hold the valve before it is uprighted. That will minimize the possibility of damage to the arms in the uprighting process.

MFL, Others have said it here, but I'll repeat anyway. Thanks for posting. So many times I have started to do something with the tractor, only to have a tiny thought bubble form in my head about something I read here. Then I change my technique or think more carefully about what I was going to do or how I was going to do it. It's one of the reasons I try to read all the reports of "bad tractor afternoons".

Glad you weren't hurt and hope your tractor comes out ahead. Thanks again for helping us all be a little safer...

You refer to "plugs" ..... Am I correct that this is a diesel engine? Henro is correct, removing the glow plugs will accomplish the same thing. As long as the cylinders are vented is all that is needed. If there is any oil in the cylinders it will be pushed out. There will be some residual oil that will not be expelled, but upon starting it will burn off. There won't be a mosquito for miles after the first 30 seconds of running. Just let it idle for 15 minutes or so and all should be well.

while it is on it's side it would be a great time to servive the underside /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can you put a socket on the harmonic balancer bolt and rotate the engine without having to remove anything? A complete rotation or two that way will will let you know if theres anything in the cylinders to hydro lock the engine. If it doesn't rotate freely then pull the glow plugs or injectors and try again.

Very glad your ok. Venting the cylinders are important. Rotating the engine with trapped oil / fuel is called hydraulicing and will cause bent connecting rods and bearing damage, sometimes worse. Beautiful tractor, hate to see anything happen like that.
