Fixing another gravel drive

If its a tractor and trailer he has nothing to worry about.

I guess you can always wait for it to snow and put the rippers shallow in the box blade to slowly knock em down and push the gravel back into the grooves. At least your neighbor will be good to help pack if you can get the tops knocked over.
I was wondering how he was going to manage a 10% grade with snow on it. This is his and my first year here, he bought about a month before I did. I've heard it can snow a lot here, but looking at the snowfall history, it's usually just a few inches at a time, but for two months it doesn't melt much. But being this will his an my first winter, we will probably get a 10 or 20 year event type of winter.

Unfortunately that is what is needed on top of the crusher run which is what I have on my 1/2 mile driveway off the main driveway. Sort of thinking that it would be cost prohibitive. 4000' x 12' x 2" x cost per yard = a lot of money. I plan on just covering the driveway inside the gate.

Actually it was lead foot induced by a previous owner who had a fencing business whose employees tended to always be in a hurry either coming or going. The new neighbor is worried about his semi (Kenworth with a livestock trailer), not making it up a rather steep short hill (25' rise in 200') if there is a lot of loose material. I am more inclined to believe that the current washboarding on the hill is more of a problem but being a retired dump truck driver I understand about axle hop on loose material.

The part I worked on I used the drag harrow on the worst side to loosen the top a little and a box blade set so the cutting and smoothing edges were about level. The other side I just box bladed. It's much smoother on the side I harrowed, but it seems more dusty.
The driveway scraper grader would help to level it,
just moving material from the high spots and filling the low spots.
It would need to be done when the ground has some moisture in it to pack it back down.
Otherwise it's just loose marbles that will kick right out.
If he's going to be coming in with a road tractor and empty trailer I hope he invests in a set of automatic chains.

I wouldn't use the rippers or just an inch of rippers just a light skim when the material has some moisture in it.
Ideally you would rip it deeper then the deepest washboard or pot hole then recompact it when graded out.

He will probably have to make arrangements to park it somewhere in the river valley. The private road entrance is about 500' above Hwy 97, so it's a bit of a climb and on a snowy evening it could be dangerous as there is one place with a 100' drop off unprotested by guardrails.

I was planning on ordering this when the old house sells Land Plane Pinnacle Series
I am not sure whether to order the 5' or 6' model, but I am leaning toward the 6'. It rains so little here and the air is generally so dry that I will have to try grading in the rain or shortly after.

Did this miss you, or are you washed out again?

Bruce
We missed it. It was between us and Battle Ground. Thanks for asking.
I am working on moving some dirt to make ditches again. I thought that dragging the dirt onto the road would be good and need the rain to pack and set? But that sounds like I need to do that in the summer. I will get some pictures of it today.
Just having issues getting the driveway. Would like to fix it before the long rains set in.

Recycled asphalt product yes, but not raw asphalt grindings. In the off season he asphalt plants around here take the raw grindings and run them through a crusher and make the 3/4 minus RAP which they mix back into the hot mix. The RAP is a little more expensive but worth the difference in price. Lay that stuff down on a warm day and rent a rolling compactor and it's almost as durable as hot mix asphalt. The problem here is the nearest asphalt plant is 40 miles and trucking costs add up quickly.
This spring I did order a load of recycled asphalt to repair some stretches of my drive.
True there is a bit of loose gravel that has surfaced but upon close inspection there was a well fused layer of asphalt underneath. (I actually took a broom to it)
The desirable good news is that heavy downpours have not eroded my drive.
It works!
Trick is to order early spring so that the hot sun can re fuse it.

Re: Using asphalt millings as gravel substitute.

A friend in rural NJ used millings to cover his 100 yd driveway 'cuz they were so cheap. And I've heard from others they do compress and compact with the sun. I know excavating contractors who use the in their yard.

Well the DEP happened to be next door to his property and they saw the millings. He was informed they were not allowed and he'd either have to have them removed or cover them with blacktop.

This is why I will not consider using them. Just a matter of time before rural PA acts like NJ.

Concrete does not contain bitumen that they don't want to leech into the ground.

The reason I asked is at our mining claim on a mountain trout stream, using concrete for any improvement is prohibited. I think due to eventual leaching into the stream. Maybe the disintegration is so slow that it is irrelevant on farmland - but F&G's perspective is preserving water quality perpetually.
